Please Vote! Landscape 42 – Transitions Challenge

October 23rd, 2021
Thank you 365 community for embracing this challenge. 59 beautiful landscape photos were entered. Narrowing them down was extremely difficult. My first cut at a short list was 15 images! Much appreciation to all the photographers who took part.

In creating the short list, I looked for a clear representation of the theme, the overall strength of the photograph, some variety in how the theme was represented, and I did not include more than one image per photographer. The theme was Transitions. Among the 8 finalists, you will find changing light, changing weather, changing tides and changing seasons. Please vote for your favourite! Voting will close at 5:00pm EDT on Monday, October 25th.

The finalists, in no particular order, are:

1. Old jalopy by @pusspup
Wylie gives us a beautifully captured setting sun with interesting clouds and strong, unusual foreground elements.

2. The Columbia River in Fall by @kiwichick
Lesley’s composition with low clouds balancing a diagonal hillside shows off these beautiful fall colours. Depth of field and natural framing are used to great effect.

3. Wisps by @joysabin
Joy has used infrared to highlight a dramatic cloud front over thick forest. The result is ethereal and compelling.

4. Spectator sport by @kali66
A spectacular pink sunset is echoed by reflections on the wet sand below, with deep shadows emphasizing the colour. Kali’s use of two silhouetted figures gives the image scale and grandeur.

5. It’s Black Over Stavros’s Mama’s Villa by @30pics4jackiesdiamond
Jackie shows us boats safely in the harbour contrasted with the threatening sky above. The placement of the clean lines of the foreground boat against the darkest part of the sky draws the eye immediately.

6. Sandbank by @wakelys
Susan brilliantly highlights the incredible patterns left by the receding tide with sepia tones. The strong horizon line is softened by pools of water and distant, solitary figures, creating seemingly endless depth.

7. Ladner Slough by @cdcook48
Chris’ wonderful composition shows us trees in every stage of turning, with the soft blue sky highlighting the range of colours. The clear vertical reflections of the tree trunks are reinforced by the piers and the stumps in the water, grounding the scene and giving it focus.

8. Assiniboia Sunset by @farmreporter
Deep pastel colours and wispy clouds contrast with the stark lines of the windmill blades. Wendy’s choice to lightly expose the foreground enhances an almost painterly effect.
