Hello! I've been on here about a week now and 19 days into my 365 - so many gorgeous photos out there, it's been really inspiring. Am also really, really pleased to have already connected with some wonderful photographers.
Just a quick wonder ... have been browsing the sites looking for shots that are taken in an urban environment - cityscapes, street art, graffiti, dereliction, urban nature - all things where you can see "the beauty in the ugly". Is anyone else interested in this sort of thing? Would be great to connect with other likeminded people ... ? The best thing about this site is that it's worldwide and it's so interesting seeing different environments and cities, but with a common theme.
You might enjoy the "eye of the beholder" challenges, they are precisely about finding the beauty where others don't.
You could also do a street search on this site to find others into urban grit.
When you do a photo every day, most people mix it up a little.
Hi Karen, this subject is the foundation of my interest, I have posted several examples, interspersed with other examples in order to avoid being boring ;)
I like urban photography and architectural images but as I don't get into the cities much (living in the suburbia) I don't have much opportunity for urban or street photography. I admire the works of Vivian Maier and think that urban photos are excellent for black and white images too because it emphasizes the forms. I don't think cities are ugly; there is a lot of beauty in order and symmetry and even in the country one can come across crumbling buildings, litter, and unsightly garbage dumps.
@stillcrappysailor - take a look at his shots - He has not been here for a while but is worth a look. You never know, he might come back (fingers crossed).
I have shots like those. I live in the metro Detroit area - I have some graffiti shots, streets, signs, bridges, etc. I tend to gravitate towards wires and poles - things that most people try to keep out of their photos. :-)
Hi Karen, for the purpose of this project I am shooting anything and everything but my project definitely includes plenty of cityscapes, street art and urban/suburban decay. Have a browse if you feel so inclined :)
Hello Karen, I have some what I call street photography that encompasses what you described. Check out my project and you can see what I am talking about. Welcome and I hope you find this project as rewarding as I have!
Enjoy. I live in the countryside but I am v fascinated by urban photography/ street photography and have a go when I can. Following you now and look forward to seeing what you post.
@tigerdreamer : yes, that's a good thing about a 365, trying out different things, just because you have to get a shot done. I started doing a monthly challenge in July (which led to this 365) and I took more photos of flowers then, than I have done in all the time I've had my camera ...
@tomsde@cindyloo@pixiemac@newbank@thistle : where we live is quite countryside (an ancient small town in Somerset), but I work and socialise in cities (Bath, Bristol and London), so I have the best of both worlds. It's surprising where you find things though, isn't it? I've got this thing about "unattractive" 60s and 70s office blocks - they make great abstracts and contrast a lot with the "beautiful" Georgian architecture in Bath. That's what I love :)
@spanner : thanks for the recommendations, I will seek them out
@hippiechick13 : sounds like my kind of topics! its seeing a photograph in something less obvious, but still really interesting
@jasonayer : am already following you, so will check out your other project!
I have lots of old barns and abandoned houses. I am just starting on a series of old but in good repair homes. Somewhere in my project/albums I also have posts of street art. @cathrinemitch Cathy is my photo buddy and she has lots in her project too. I'm with @tomsde in the visiting of NYC for a photo outing. I wonder if we could plan one for people from far and wide to all get together in one location.
Oh and welcome to 365 Karen :)
Haven't been around much over the summer, but urban/street is one of my interests and have quite a bit dotted through my albums. Will also be posting some recent street shots over the next few weeks. Have followed you.
@tomsde@k1w1 : well i'm in the UK, but hell yeah, I'd be up for a NY/photo visit :)
I can return the favour if anyone wants to come to London - we lived there for nearly 20 years and I still go back a lot for work/social (and also photography). There are so many amazing places to get off the tourist trail.
@shotbykaren Love to hit London. My husband's brother is living there at the moment. Not sure for how long but would be nice to get over there while he is there. I can let you know if it happens :)
@shotbykaren Right now I am still recovering from some health issues but I will do as much as I can. It is urban in general or are you going to set a theme...urban decay, street art etc.
All good! We could start in September ? No need to do every month (although that would be great), just dip in and out as you are able?
@k1w1 : Hi Christine - I guess it would be good to set a topic each month, would be really interesting to see everyone's take on something, especially as we're scattered all over the globe! But it can be anything really - perhaps a different person can decide on the topic each month?
@suebarni : I'm the same Sue, my project won't just be urban-y things as I might not be somewhere at the time I take a photo! Also, probably boring for everyone else to see the same thing on my project every day! I guess I shoot what most inspires me, which are colours and patterns. I love abstracts.
@karlow75 : other side of the world, but you never know! would need a good tour guide :)
@shotbykaren
Came across the tag urban-challenge-nature by chance while looking at your photo's. I can't really seem to find the details anywhere. I'm sure more people would be interested if they knew about it. There is so much happening on this site I expect I've just missed it!!
@thistle : Hi Joyce - am not sure how to "publicise" a challenge on here. We had a discussion then just tag our pictures - let me know what I need to do ! :) Thanks K
@shotbykaren Hi Karen I honestly don't know as I'm fairly new but looking at it. If you go to the heading 'Discuss' then scroll down to 'themes and competitions' there is a link on the top right hand corner saying 'new topic'
Hopefully that will do it!! Sorry not to be more help but I don't know what I'm doing either. :-) It's such a good idea it would be great to publicise it a bit more. When I clicked on the link just now there were two of your pictures(love the tyre!) and one of mine. It would be great to see some more. Hope this is of some help if I've got it right that is!!
@thistle : Ah, i think I might have used the wrong tag then, as I know there's quite a few images up there now. I just checked and the CORRECT tag is :
urban-theme-nature
Sorry Joyce !! If you change the tag, your photo will join the group - there's some FAB pictures in there !

Welcome!
Looking forward to seeing more of yours.
@archielogical @lisawashere @aliha @brianarmoured @thirdjoe @thistle @newbank : great to meet you all, will be following and keeping an eye out too

@seanoneill : Thanks Sean, ditto
@aliha : thanks Alison, will check these out when I get home, and not sneaking non-work websites into my day, ha ha
Anyone fancy doing a monthly Urban themed challenge?
We haven't had a shout out for shopping trolley images for a while. http://365project.org/discuss/general/14608/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-shopping-cart-trolley
