CSC14-16 - Candlelight

October 25th, 2014
Thank you, all, I am thrilled to be picked to host this challenge. Not too experienced, though. I am grateful for any help or tips.

So, here we go:
Do some of the camera setting intimidate you? Do you want to learn how to develop your photography skills and learn how to use your camera effectively without always going back to the "auto" function. These challenges are for you.

This challenge is about CANDLELIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY (it is after all Halloween and there are all these candles being lit everywhere…)

Taking pictures using only candlelight can be a challenge for sure. But the results are often really beautiful and if you master it not only you can do great portraits, still life etc. with a minimum technical equipment, you are also ready to work in any low light, problematic situation.

There are some simple rules - since candlelight is not too strong a source of light, you will be shooting with slower speeds, probably needing a tripod. The low light can be compensated by higher ISO, but you have to decide how much noise can your picture take. There is also an important question of white balance - should avoid auto setting not to loose the warm glow. The biggest challenge is the fact, that the candle itself - if it is IS a part of the picture and I would suggest it would be - is pretty bright and if you want to make sure there is not a big burned out spot, you have to usually set the exposure manually, overexposing only a tiny bit for the dark parts of the picture.

There are many tricks that can help you with this challenge like using some reflectors, using more than one candle, playing with composition and direction of light. So, you can just jump in and experiment or use some links bellow for more tips:
