Artist Challenge: Pete Turner

January 25th, 2020
I am amazed and delighted at winning the latest Artist Challenge with my interpretation of Michael Kenna’s minimalist black and white style. This is the one form of photography that I have the hardest time with so was honoured to have been chosen by my peers to have accomplished that mission!

Thank you, Jackie @30pics4jackiesdiamond for hosting that challenge and thank you to everyone who participated and voted in it.

I have chosen a photographer who is in complete contrast to Michael Kenna.

Pete Turner, (1934 – 2017) has been voted as one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time by Photo District News. Known as the Master of Colour Photography, his work is on more than 80 album covers, as well as commercial ventures too numerous to mention. He was a photojournalist, who spent time on Iceland during a volcanic eruption and also captured the now famous lone giraffe as it galloped across the empty plain before him, its neck rising above the horizon while on assignment in Amboseli National Park in Kenya in 1964.

This quote from ‘More Joy of Photography: 100 Techniques for More Creative Photographs’ by the Editors of Eastman Kodak Company says it all.

“Any picture that promotes colour from its usual supporting role to a centre-stage position immediately becomes visually compelling. Learning how to emphasize colour is mainly a matter of training your eye to recognize when colour predominates – of selecting and minimizing the number of colours in a scene or by isolating a colourful element. When it comes to doing this, Pete Turner is widely acknowledged as a master.”

Here are but a few links about this great photographer. There are a ton more if you just Google Pete Turner.

The challenge starts today, January 24th and runs until Friday, February 14th. I will then have the very difficult job of short-listing the entries that weekend.

Please tag your entries as ac-peteturner
And, could you please indicate which work of his that you drew your inspiration from to help me select the finalists from?

I have added Pete Turner to this list of previous artists that Vikki @summerfield has been diligently updating. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CfwEEyozvaxNDcRB3r8_xxyznNKIc7O1E1GdP9FUFKQ/edit#gid=0

I hope you all can have fun with this one ... even those of you in the monochrome camp!
