Black and White Challenge 63 : Panorama

June 15th, 2021
Thanks to everyone who took part in the last challenge, both in submitting entries and taking part in the voting. Special thanks go to @30pics4jackiesdiamond for all her work in hosting the challenge .

It was great to win and I appreciate all those who took the time to vote for my entry, it does mean I don’t get to take part in the next round though.

For bw-63 I’ve chosen the theme of Panorama, it’s not already on the list and it’s something I have a go at from time to time and would like to put a bit more effort into so this might give me a bit of encouragement .

There’s no particular subject so it can be anything you want. Landscape, urban, huge vista, horizontal, vertical or whatever.

I’ve posted a few, of the many, links to guides on shooting panoramas, they’re quite detailed so here’s a wee list of things to consider when shooting panoramas.

Keep the camera level and overlap each image by about a third, give yourself a little extra at either end too. Even if you are shooting a horizontal panorama if you shoot in portrait format you’ll have a bit more leeway if shots don’t quite line up.

If you can, shoot manually, you don’t want focus to change from frame to frame and you want exposure to remain consistent across all the shots you are going to use. Even though your finished image is going to be black and white set your white balance too.

Try to do most of your post processing before creating your panorama. If you are shooting in raw and generating your panorama straight from the raw files it’s going to be a big file so if that’s going to be an issue export to jpeg first.

You can create panoramas in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements using the Photomerge command and by using Edit In -> Photomerge -> Panorama in Lightroom

Alternatively you can you can use dedicated software like Autostitch:

Or

Image Composite Editor

Both free and there are plenty of others.

There are various online tools available too or you can shoot panoramas quite easily using a mobile phone.

@iqscotland Hello! I noticed that the challenge ended a couple of days ago and I can't find the voting thread for this challenge. in case you haven't already, would you please set it up so that the challenge goes on? In case you have any issues with that, please let me know here and we'll sort it out. Thank you so much!
PS: I wouldn't want to be in your shoes and have to select from those entries... :D They're so good!
