So I'm a newbie on here, and there are sooo many stunning photos that are under the popular title... and I was wondering, how do they actually get there!! Is it because of Favs/Views or something?? Could somene tell me?! :)
To quote the musical "My Fair Lady": "faith, hope and a little bit o' luck"! hahaha
(seriously, though, it's based on an automated process that selects photos based on something like a view-to-follower-to-fav ratio... fondly known as the "magic monkeys")
it's based on some sort of algorithm - number of views to comments to favs and possibly something to do with the speed this happens and the number of followers you have! Either that or the Monkeys that determine the appearances on the page are really Magic! @tabithasyear@kericherry
Precisely what @sparkle said.
I reckon it's do with followers:views:comments:faves ratio...and how quickly it happens.
Someone with 300 followers would need more views, comments and favs than someone who only has 10 followers.
I recommend not looking at the popular page very often. You will see two things. Pictures so good, they can actually make you question why you try to take pictures at all. And you will see pictures that make you think, why in the world is that picture popular and how is it any better than anything I've done?
@scatcat Indeed! As long you can manage not to worry about the PP you are fine. I think I didn't visit the PP anymore after 3 months :-) Also because I totally agree with @msk1p2
In my experience, if you take a nice/funny picture of a squirrel, you will get onto the popular page :)
Seriously though, it's kind of nonsense and I would try to enjoy the 365 community without it. It's nice when you do get up there, and you can often find some inspiration and new people to follow, but it really doesn't mean much. Participating in discussions and competitions and interacting with people via comments is the best way to enjoy this community.
@wrighty ... I agree with you, Martha, but try always to remember that this is not a competition but an opportunity to see what others are doing and how they react to different ideas, perhaps learn from them, and decide whether to follow their example or just wonder how they get away with it. I have wondered the same about some of mine that have mysteriously or miraculously appeared there, too!
@sparkle Nice answer....I've not been able to figure out this either so I sort of quit thinking of 'how' they get there, but just look and enjoy them...
oh ok it seems a bit too complicated for me to understand with those ratios (I'm a fail at maths) so i think i'll let the mystery of the Magic Monkeys remain :) @johnnyfrs you make me laugh :D
thanks everyone! also how do you get more followers?? ;)
@mastermek you and @msk1p2 are right! I also don't look at the PP too often (mostly by lack of time), I may miss some really interesting pics, but I prefer concentrating on pics from my regular followers/commenters and on the ones I follow :-)
@kericherry having more followers will come with time. Don't be in a hurry. Post pics, interact by commenting on others' pics and it will come. Usually, when you have many followers, only a part of them regularly comment on your pics (always the same people, most of the time). So, it's the not the number that makes the quality of your followers :-)
@wrighty That is good advice, Martha. I sometimes stress over this PP thing and I don't want to do that. I just want to enjoy taking pics and enjoy looking at other peoples pics. It's probably better not to place too much importance on it.
Oh, and about the cute squirrel thing. I had what I thought was a cute squirrel picture but it never made it to the PP. LOL
It's me again, just wanted to ask a quick question... When you are repling to a discussion/competition, how do you upload your photo?? All i can see is the reply box but there's no 'upload' button! Anyone?? I bet it's the simplest thing ever but I just can't see it!!
@kericherry Beside your picture, where exif info is, there is a textbox with code in it. Copy and paste that HTML code in your reply, your picture will show up when you post it.
Is it just me or are the tags not working? I don't seam to appear against any if my tags or even against today. Is it likely I'm doing something wrong?
@amoment Nooo!! anyone who gets a certain number of views/favs does i think! one of the people who started this project had a photo on the popular page by the 3rd day!!
@sparkle@kericherry i don't think those are right (forgive me if i sound rude) i checked the FAQ and it said that those aren't reason
i think the "monkeys" go around and find great pictures
I for one love looking the PP and the Trending Page - I don't feel intimidated at all - I am in awe and a lot of those picture inspire me. A few of mine have made it there and yes it does give you an extra boost because more people are seeing your picture than just your friends, but I don't strive for it. I find new people to follow through there as well ... this is about learning and honing YOUR skills ... not really a competition, but sometimes it's good to see it that way maybe - gives you a little extra incentive to try something new.
Okay, done rambling. Just my opinion.

The mystery of the Magic Monkeys remains, and it's a good thing not to know :-)

Welcome and good luck with your 365 :)
Also begging your followers for help cannot hurt.
Seriously though, no one knows.
@mastermek Agreed!
@johnnyfrs LOL!! You're too funny...but probably on the right track

If one of your pics does get onto the PP, how would/do you know?
Does an auto-email get sent?
Butl for me it was luck, I was bored and browsing the page, I nearly fell off my chair when I realised :-0
