Blowing Out the Candles

January 5th, 2012
So... my daughter's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to FINALLY get that awesome shot of her blowing out the candles on her cake. My attempts thus far have been average. Anyone have any good tips or tricks?

Thanks for your help!

Use a fast shutter speed to capture the action, perhaps your f stop should be mid way to capture detail. You can have her blowing the candles in the dark and use a light to illuminate her.. Just depends what kind of shot you want... I could be wrong but it's worth a test!

I also recommend a profile shot, or 3/4 profile, not head on. Otherwise, as mentioned, continuous shutter.

I would def do a practice run with a friend beforehand if you want to capture that absolutely perfect shot!

Well, here it is. Definitely better than my efforts in the past! My husband was kind enough to sit for a practice run. Lol. That helped a lot! Any suggestions on processing? I use Lightroom primarily. I feel like so much more could be done with this photo and would welcome suggestions/constructive criticism. Thank you!

I love that you got the wisp of smoke from the one that she blew out. Very cool.
