I'm sorry if there's another topic like this, but I couldn't find the answer...
I have Speedlite 430 EX II for my Canon EOS 450D and I have only used them together by now. I know I can use the speedlite also when not on camera, but I am not sure the item I need to buy. I am just looking on the e-bay and I wonder if this would work? Can anybody help me?
@velina Yep that looks like it should work. It is just a basic transmitter. The picture is not very clear, but you should probably make sure the receiver has a tripod mount screw at the bottom as that will come in really handy when you want to secure it on to something :D
@brendan
Well I need this item for two different purposes:
1. When for example I am doing a self-portrait, I want to have a remote control for the shutter instead of running to the camera back and forth
2. I want to use my external light to lighten up an object I want to capture, but I want the speedlite to be not attached to my camera, but somewhere else. Like to use it instead of some photography light(lamp).
Point 1) a remove trigger for your flash will not give you this, you need a remote trigger for your camera.
Point 2) there are two ways you can do this - 1) a long cord but get a ETTL cord 2) $$$ using a wire less trigger.
The issue with a wireless trigger for flash is 99.9% do not give you control over your flash through wireless - i.e. you can not adjust the power from the camera.
the ones that do allow are about $300 for a transmitter and 2 receivers.
With a long ETTL cord you can put the flash anywhere and you can control it from the camera.
I guess the other option is to get a 580 and use that as the master and have the 430 as the slave but they are also not that cheap.
I would suggest you purchase the 33' cord from here - have one of these :
I am with Brendan. I bought the same long OCF cord which is more useful than my expensive Canon ST-E2 remote controller. While you are at it, I highly recommend this book for using speedlights: http://www.amazon.com/Speedliters-Handbook-Learning-Craft-Speedlites/dp/032171105X I wish I had bought this book when I bought my speedlights 2 years earlier. It is a bible for speedlights.
@brendan@hamp Thank you very much for the answers, thank God I haven't ordered anything yet:) I am new to these accessories, so it was a bit confusing when I first started searching information, but now things got clearer I think:) So I am buying an ETTL cord with a long cable, cause using a wire less trigger for the flash means I have to push 2 triggers at the same time and I don't like the idea:)
@brendan
And by the way, Brendan to your comment: "Point 1) a remove trigger for your flash will not give you this, you need a remote trigger for your camera." I think what I posted is a 2 in 1 - I mean it clearly says it CAN be used also as Wireless Shutter function for camera.
@velina Wireless triggers have their place in flash photography of course. But, as an order of priority for spending precious money, I believe you will do better with the extra long ETTL cord from OCF in combination with the book that tells you everything you need to know about using speed lights. Please let us know how things turn out.

I've got a similar one for my flash, it's basically like an extension hot shoe.
You could also think about getting wireless transmitters for your flash so you aren't restricted by the distance of the chord.
Hope that helps! :D
I want to buy just the right thing, which will be most useful in all kind of situations and definately the wireless is better.
I think this would work out, isn't it? :))) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PT-04Wireless-Remote-Flash-Trigger-Transmitter-1-Receiver-Canon-430EX-580EX-/280760776330?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item415ea5768a#ht_4608wt_1037
It can be used for several purposes - as a remote trigger, also as a flash trigger, and it's wireless! :)

I used the cord to put my flash in my air con to take this photo.
