tripod suggestions needed! :-)

February 15th, 2012
Hello! I'm looking for a tripod and I'm not 100% sure where to go with it. Ideally I'd like a manfrotto because ive got a monopod with the ball head. I'm most interested in wildlife photography and have a canon 7d and so far a 100-400 zoom lens. They weigh ~4kg together. The tripod needs to be pretty solid but not so heavy I can't carry it all (I'm pretty small!). Willing to spend ~£200 or so on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone have a specific model they just can't do without? I'm a bit stuck!

Thanks for your help!

i have a manfrotto 190XPROB with a three way head. It is very sturdy and i am more than happy with the build quality. However, the setup is rated to about 5-6kg off the top of my head, so you may need to get the next step up.

Also, if you're wanting to take a tripod on treks/bushwalking, i would recommend splashing out on a carbon fibre tripod. I have trekked with mine and as great as the work out was, it is quite tiring for the arms especially on a hot day.

Carbon really makes it light. I rented a Induro tripod and manfrotto head. I bought an induro travel full size tripd an went with a different head due to weight and less need.

I have the Manfrotto 190XPROB too and it is superb but heavy. I also bought the 804RC2 basic pan tilt head which is also superb but doesn't fit in the tripod bag unless I unscrew 2 out of 3 handles ... bit annoying. However the quality in both are excellent. I plan to buy a Manfrotto ball head in the future for when I take the tripod out of the house.

I'd look for carbon fiber, easy leg locking/unlocking system and a short physical length when shut all the way down for easy transport. Get a tripod that extends to your height and a little taller.

I've been very happy with my Induro with Induro head. If you can afford it I'd get the CT214 or CT314. Their new heads look really nice too - BHL2 or BHL 3.

@shirljess @scatochef @brumbe @zferrie @aspada @donseymour Thanks guys! That's been really helpful. I'm going in to Jacobs this weekend to try out a few and will look for the 190XPROB and see if there are any Induro tripods in there too. Torn between Carbon Fibre and Aluminium as I've heard CF can lose intergrity once it's been bumped... I'm a bit clumsy for that! Anyone had any trouble with it damaging easily? x

I have a Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod and it is really very sturdy. I also went with CF since I do hike sometimes and the reduced weight is very much needed. It is rated at 8Kg, my gear is not that heavy but I went for that options to give me a bit extra weight for a sturdier and more stable legs.
I have bumped and dropped them a few times, each time I am very glad that it did not damage, not even a mark on it.
For me the extra price was worth it for the reduced weight that the CF offer.
PS: If I took the smaller CF option my head would have been heavier than my legs, and that is not good :P I have a Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head, must for macro photography

@meiphotography I'm looking for a new tripod. I ran across this discussion as I was researching and wondered what did you end up getting. I have no clue, although the various discussions have been helpful to point out different details to be aware of.
