Broken Camera Lens

February 15th, 2012
I don't really know how to describe it. I feel like such a COMPLETE IDIOT. I keep my nice little Canon Rebel XT in my friggan purse because I didn't save enough stinkin' money for a case.
This is the camera and the lens, by the way.

So now the glass isn't broken. It's just it doesn't move fluidly when I turn it (which I can but it makes all these grinding gears type of noises) and can't focus.
I'm about to cry. Please let me know what I should do. How much money am I going to have to belt out to fix it or is there any at home things I/my mechanical father could try?

Thank you so much. This is seriously awful.

@leahmnash link didn't work for me.

Doesn't sound good. You could try taking it to a proper camera shop (not ritz ect) but it's not likely much they can do to fix it short of sending it back to canon.

Check on ebay, you should be able to get a second hand lens for really cheap.

Step three, stop by your local thrift store, check out the purses section, get some foam from a crafts store. Instant camera bag. To be on the safe side, get one that is big enough but not at all flashy. Most people know what a camera bag looks like, and what would be inside $$$$

oh dear :( I am so bad, I do the same thing. I vowed this year to take better care of my equipment!! Sounds like it's broken, I I don't know if it's worth the $ to fix :( Mine is damaged (there is a crack on the outside ring so I can't screw on any attachments :( and sometimes it has trouble autofocusing. Check Craigslist for a replacement! I've been scouting.

I did the same thing with my first good dsl,r a canon xti. Now my kit lense the 18-55 has some spots on it I cant get out. I am just mad at myself for not taking better care of it. I recently bought a canon 60 d and I am very protective of it and the lenses.

It is possible to get good deals on ebay. When they started the film challenge on here, I was able to get a nice nikon lense for my film camera for under 100 and the Canon 55-250 for 180 vs 300 it goes for. good luck.

This happened to me

I was told by two camera shops that it wasn't worth repairing (cost vs value). I went home realising I'd probably end up throwing it away, so gathered it was worth trying something myself. I basically forced it "back" open!

It works fine, although it does occasionally grate a little bit. It's still the lens I use the most.

Good luck. It's very upsetting when this happens. Especially if you're blaming yourself! xx

@bobfoto I wish I'd have experimented before fixing!

We have a local camera shop here called Southern Photo. I broke my best friend's lens when I was borrowing it where it wouldn't turn good or focus at all. It cost me around $115 to get it fixed. I wouldn't have fixed it if it was mine, but I wanted to give it back to her when I was able to buy myself a lens. Try to find someplace local and get a quote. They might tell you it's just worth buying a new lens.

I know the horrible feeling in your gut when that happens. I had a proper camera bag when an extra lens rolled out of it because I had left the zip partially open! I took it to my local camera shop just to ask if it was broken or not (couldn't even look at it I was so devastated) and found out that the protective UV filter had taken the brunt of the fall and that's where all the broken glass was from. If you decide to send it in for repair try to get a quote first. Repairs can be long and expensive!

oh I feel your pain, my DSLR is a bit messed up - this sounds strange, but when I take a photo the image is slightly out - eg I put an object in the centre of the viewfinder, when i look at the photo it is too the left, or right....so I have to overcompensate, which is really frustrating....I had recently had to fix the screen as it broke, and that was over £100...I just can't afford a new camera, I have my day-to-day point and shoot, but it's not the same as my DSLR...and don't know why my camera is doing this....any suggestions ??

Leah why don't you go to a camera repair shop and just ask for a repair quote...it might not be too much. Good luck - let us know how you get on

Flip it from AF to manual (if you don't want to fork out the $$$ to fix it) and use it in manual focus mode. So much easier than you might think.

I know the sickening feeling that comes with a broken lens! Take it to a good camera shop - they'll be able to tell you if it's repairable. Chances are, it'll need to be sent to Canon. Good news is that they won't do any work without an estimate first, and you have to authorize any work before they begin. My lens cost half as much to repair as it did to buy new, so I went with it. If your lens costs too much to fix, maybe it's time to invest in a new one - maybe a nifty 50, if you don't already have one.

Depending on the lens you have some of the kit lens are pretty cheap to replace on ebay. Is it still under warranty? I recently sent a camera and a lens back to Canon for cleaning and calibration both still under warranty so no charge. I also got both items back in 1 week. Canon will give you an estimate of the charges prior to any work being done. Will only cost you to ship & insurance on your item.
Good Luck!

I dropped both my lenses once (clumsy me), and heard a terrifying niose of broken glass. Fortunately, it was the UV filters hat absorved the shock and broke, but the lenses were ok. I will never have a lens without an UV after this, they are far chaeaper and easier to replace thanany lense.
