As some of you may know, I just started a full-time tertiary arts course with a focus on photography. Many of you have indicated that you would love to be studying too, but can't at this time for whatever reason. So, I bring the school TO YOU!! My intention is to share all my lessons, photos and feedback from my teachers with you, so you can share in what I am learning and know what an art teacher may look for in your photos. Please feel free to let me know what is useful to you and what isn't...I hope to provide a combination of photo ideas as well as technical knowledge and tricks...
Student Assignment One - Discovering My Space
YOUR TASK
The word "space" can be interpreted widely. What does it mean to you? For this project, think loosely about your own "space". Your task is to record spaces in your various environments with your camera.
How do you feel about personal space? Have you ever been on a train in Tokyo in rush hour? How do you feel when you are by yourself in nature? How do you feel underground or on a mountaintop? Take 6-12 photos.
When you have your photos, you may choose to answer these questions...
1. What discoveries, if any, did you find out about your personal space?
2. Do you think your images adequately explain your personal space? Why or why not?
3. What are your thoughts about the type of space you tried to capture?
4. If you encountered any failures, frustrations or limitations, what were they?
(I encountered some natural lighting problems that I will now investigate remedies to!)
If you want to play along, feel free to tag your pics "photoschool365"
@pwallis Yes, now please pay me accordingly! LOL!! Actually, I'm probably violating state government copyright, but oh well...the govts of the world have committed far worse crimes!
This is really awesome. I have wanted to take a photography class for a long time, but just can't manage it right now. So, this may be a dumb question, but will you be posting the lessons in the discussion forums or on your page? Which leads to other questions. How often will you be posting assignments and what day? I don't always check the forums, so I wouldn't want to miss them.
Thank you for sharing what you are learning. I think that's a pretty awesome thing to do.
@lauriehiggins Good question! I've been wondering that myself! posting them on my page would be a sneaky way of getting more followers. LOL! ..but honestly I'm not sure. Do you have any ideas?
OooooO ! How cool is this! I don't check out the forums too often either, so I'd suggest you put this stuff on your own page, along with a pic you took for the assignment ? It's much easier to find the stuff there. You could do a separate tag for the assignment pictures, like 'photoschool365-ass' , then all the assignments would be one click away. Also, when people are posting their pictures, it would be cool to tag them with a number of the assignment, 'photoschool365-1' .... a generic tag will be useless after 10 assignments.
@janmaki Excellent thoughts about the tag. I saw how many jan12_treasures photos there ended up being! No probs, my orderly little friend! ;-)
Ok, peeps, I'll leave the first assignment here since it's already here, and anyone who wants to do it can tag their pics "photoschool365-1 "as suggested by the genius Jani (who, incidentally posts most excellent, arty and creative pics every day, and you wouldn't go wrong in following him if you don't already!) After this week, I will post each assignment to my project every Wednesday Eurpoean/American/Canadian time, which is Thursday in Australia/New Zealand.
@tabbycat Does that include white space as I am trying to take photos with and without white space. Also as I am using film and doing other challenges then I won't manage 6 before next week.
Alright you've piqued my interest. Can't promise how much I can complete the assignments but anything to take my photography to the next level and every little bit helps. Thanks so much for being willing to share your learnings with us. :)
Wow, what a cool thing to do, thanks for letting us share! I'm already thinking about photo's, so we'll see! I needed some new input and this might be perfect! Love it!
This is wonderful, Tabitha!! Thanks for sharing...I will try to post if I actually get a picture worth posting but I will be following along!!! Thanks!
How Sweet!!! Thankyou for your Generosity in Sharing your lessons..Looking foward to your Photo's..I am going to try and go to School witrh you!!....:)
This is exactly why i Love this Group ...This !st Lesson is going to be interesting ! Have Fun!
@tabbycat thank you so much for sharing this with us, you are a legend. I have been wanting to study for a while. I look forward to your lesson each Wednesday :)
This is going to be very long winded, so I'm apologizing now.
I am still learning how to take pictures. I read your idea and immediately got a picture in my "minds eye". My problem is, I'm not sure how to take the picture.
The picture would look like:
A small circle on the floor, either made out of tape or scraves or whatever. Outside of the circle would be a ton of childrens toys scattered around. My children would be running around the circle (you would see them as a blurr in the photo) and I would be in the circle with either a cup of coffee or my hands over my ears.
This would all signify that my "space" is tiny. Chaos is spinning out of control outside of my little circle.
So thats it. I know, its a lot to take in. Sorry. I'm just not sure how to capture that scenrio in an actual picture. I know it can be done but may not be possible for someone just starting out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!!!
@serramom Do you have a tripod? Does your camera have a timer or remote shutter release? It might help to draw the photo out on paper - in as many ideas as you have for it. A visual diary is an essential part of my course and David is really big on that! Tape of the opposite colour to the floor would work really well, I think. I take it you were thinking of taking the photo from above? That's what I see when I read your words. You may need to enlist a helper...but ANYTHING is possible if you have enough drive and desire to do it!
Don't apologise for taking up space in the world. You have as much right to do that as anyone else! I'm so glad my idea has inspired you to get creative and make a statement that is important to you! :-) I can't wait to see how this photo turns out now!
Count me in on this. It may be a few weeks before I can take a good photo because right now my space is my bed (have such bad anesthesia headaches I have been told to lie down) or my living room.
Thanks! I am one of the 'for whatever reason'-ers! I am just starting out and reading as much as I can, but can't afford classes at this time! This should be great experience!
@tabbycat Just uploaded my first input for this 365-photoschool. How often and how do we get the new assignments? Do you create a new discussion for each assignment?
@la_photographic Excellent stuff Laura! I especially love the painted faces! Looks like they were very colourful! Tag your piccies photoschool365-1 so they're together with everyone else's....
@horselover Sorry I missed your comment! and thanks for reminding me @bookcasefrenzy ! No, you don't need an ace membership, though I highly recommend one anyway - it's your call. Just follow me and keep an eye out for the new assignment each Wed if you're in Europe/America or Thu if you are in Australia/New Zealand/South East Asia. When I give the assignment, I will tell you what to tag it, so everyone can look at all the photos for each assignment together! Welcome!! :-)
@tabbycat I would love an ace membership and even though I know it's not a ton of money, it's just something I can't swing right now. Maybe closer to the summer when the kids are done with school expenses. I look forward to following you and the class!
@tabbycat Thank you so much for the advise as well as the encouragement. I am looking forward to experimenting with my idea. I may have to modify it but I will do my best. Thank you for offering this wonderful opportunity.
@serramom Sure! Feel free to modify away! Sometimes I will be doing things at school using tools and equipment that people won't have at home, so I will have to modify some things to make it easier for y'all....
@tabbycat I am still very new at how this all works. I ended up taking my pic. It turned out differently than I had pictured but I still think it portrays my feelings well. How do I apply it to this feed? Thanks for all of your help.
@serramom You don't need to apply it to this feed. Just tag it "photoschool365-1" for the first assignment, and "photoschool365-2" for the second one. This thread is now pretty much defunct, as all future assignments will be posted on my project...
New assignment coming tomorrow. Jeni will post a new discussion thread because I quit 365 yesterday, but will still be giving her the assignments to pass onto you all...sorry for all the confusion, but I don't yet have a crystal ball. LOL!
