Rangefinder Tips n Tricks?

April 22nd, 2012
So I'm super excited, Can't wait to finish work at 3 and get out under the rain clouds that are haunting us here recently. I'm going to fire the whole film through and get it processed tomorrow, I would have got it done today but Sunday hours apply to all supermarkets so they are shut at four.

So anyway, If you have any tips you think may be of use please drop them here so I can read them later :)

@38mm I still haven't found what that ring does, I read the minolta 7s manual this morning and on that camera it is an aperture ring. I'm just going to leave it on Auto today.

@justeddie Yeah I'm a bit confused as well,, on the Minolta and Konica apparently its the Aperture, but on the Vivitar / Prinz its an additional Pre-focus ring which is odd as they are all the same camera. But the numbers on your's don't really make sense for either????

Um...... take notes on each shot, I do that on my Fujica anyways so I can post EXIF info for my film shots. But yeah note each setting, distance you are from subject, lighting etc. Its a bit tedious but should help you understand why each shot turns out like it does.

Looking forward to seeing the results, the general opinion seems to be its got a shit hot lens no matter what brand on the case.

40mm - f/1.7 I would say go street, or go home :P

Best of luck

ETA : Does it have a battery fitted? I think it would have originally used a mercury cell. You will need to source one of the mercury substitute ones if so, no sure if the Auto will work without it???

@38mm I read that it works with an LR44, so fingers crossed.. great tips all duly noted and I am headed into Newcastle City Centre so Street is on the cards, I wanna re-create a couple of old digital compositions as well :)

@justeddie looking at them numbers as an aperture ring 56 - 5.6 28 - 2.8 then it goes 14 well the lens is 1.7 and after or before it has a 7??? beats the shit out of me, I'll ask the bloke at Bonsers when I'm next there. He might know.

@38mm Dave a.k.a (@chewyteeth) has left a probable answer r-e that extra ring on the picture of it. The other good news is the meter on the camera almost always seemed to line up with my visual interpretation of the EV on my exposure Calculator, sometimes the aperture seemed a stop out but without an external meter, who knows? only time will tell!

I only tried one street shot and I know I failed cos the person I was shooting dropped his umbrella and by the time he lifted it he had passed, I reckon it needs a strap put on it so I can shoot from the Hip.. I also found it very unusual not feeling the slap of mirror, it was kind of like "oh! is that it?"

As for the keeping notes, I tried my best, I missed a few and must of fired two shots accidently, the focus though tricky seemed spot on as well on my scale ruler whenever I checked. I'll try and get the rest of the film done tomorrow, finding pictures and thinking in B&W was a lot harder than I thought. Sorry if I'm going on, I'm just proper buzzing at the newness of it all.

@justeddie I'm really not a fan of shooting from the hip, only if its a situation that might kick off if someone is taking a photo, it's not quite as bad as pretending to make phone calls on a mobile phone and taking candids, but pretty close.

All my street stuff is here, about 10 were from the hip but that's all

@38mm I have never actually shot from the hip haha It would be nice to have it resting there ready though when the chance presents itself, I found carrying it in my hand all day a bit cumbersome. I will check your street stuff out soon enough, I need a break from the internet!

My friend is a really good street photographer, well I think he is.. you should check his work out. Search Tom Patrick on Flickr, He shoots film too :)
