Im building a light tent...

April 26th, 2012
I like taking photos of 'things' and realise I need a light tent.

Im roughly following some suggestions I found online to build one using some piping and white fabric (still searching for a suitable lamp). I was interested to see what other peoples DIY light tents end up looking like. Would appreciate seeing what your tent setup looks like? Also any tips / school boy errors to avoid when building/setting up?!

Here is a site with a lot of detailed instructions on various different versions:

I, if I ever can get to it, plan on making mine out of window screen frames and replacing the screen with white cloth (t-shirt material or something similar probably)...then I can have rigid frames, just have to figure a way to attach them all together so it's not permanent but still strong...the screen thing is easy because it involves a ready made frame, the screen tubing and a screen tool, all pretty inexpensive at a hardware store...just stretch the fabric like you would a screen, put the tubing in the channel and set it in with the roller tool....viola, instant side/top/whatever for your light tent....you can get the frames cut to size or use the ready made sizes and they usually aren't too expensive either.

@shadesofgrey I would imagine hinges would work to keep it together and then be able to fold. I would go with a white fabric from the fabric store that is used for clothing or drape liners. Kind of like a parachute feel, but much cheaper. I think that with the fabric being a tight weave but thin would be better than a tshirt that is a bit thicker and will block some of the light.

@shadesofgrey sorry, no link. Rip stop nylon. One yard would be 59 inches by 36 inches for $7.00. You could also get other colors of fabric to give a different look and stuff. http://www.joann.com/rip-stop-nylon-many-colors/xprd560961/

@brumbe agreed on the fabric...I am not a fabric store frequenter so I wasn't sure what they had but it would have been better to suggest going to one and finding something suitable...my fingers got ahead of me! I think hinges would work fine...I would like mine to be adjustable both lenghtwise and height wise so I am trying to figure out if that is possible....

@shadesofgrey not sure about that, but if you get the metal screens that adjust in width or height, they sometimes have the little metal clamps with the twisty metal non point screw to make it stay together.

i made a 2x2 meter large tent once. two squares held up by large cindrical sticks. by drilling holes in the two sqaures you can stick the cilindrical sticks in them. sorry for the cryptic description but i have no example

Thanks for suggestions so far. I have got the bits together for the frame.. Using plastic tubing as this allows for the legs to fold up and you can make it bigger just with some more pipe. I shall go to the craft store and see what fabric they have... Will post some pics of the end result!
