Studio lighting

May 17th, 2012
I have a couple of product shoots coming up, and I'm looking for a basic lighting set-up. I don't want to spend a ton of money, as I don't expect to be doing a lot of these, but I want to make sure I have my bases covered.

I was looking at this set-up. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I have a similar 2-umbrella setup with daylight-adjust fluorescent lights. The lights are 105W and really bright at that, but I paid vastly less than this on eBay, I think around $120. I recommend the CF (compact fluorescent) lights, they stay heaps cooler and use less power and give a great light.

@melissapike @agima Hi Melisaa I added Brendan (agima) into this reply as he is a lighting guru :D The kit linked looks like a solid starting kit.

Mel.

I agree with @pizzaboy as they seem over priced. If I was going to spend that amount I would bet some alien bees.

Have a look at what B&H have in kits:

What type of product shots are you doing?

@pizzaboy @agima @flagged Thanks for your feedback! I really have no basis for comparison, so I wasn't sure if that was good or not. Brendan, I'm doing some metal machine parts for one shoot and pastries for the other. I'll definitely check out B&H's kits. I was mainly looking at Adorama for the lazy factor... they're a half block from my office.

So you would only need a small softbox or umbrella.

@melissapike Buy 1 or 2 YN560's and 1 or 2 umbrellas or softboxes.
