Watermarking

For those who use Lightroom: When watermarking your photos do you create one set with watermarks and one without?

I am trying to figure out a system that works when it comes to watermarking. I recently posted some photos and ended up selling some prints online however the prints included my watermark. I couldn't take it off because I usually delete photos off form Lightroom when done editing and exporting. In order to remove watermark I had to re-edit photos and export.

What works for you??

I save one of each. (And I make sure to keep them in a separate folder on my computer so I don't accidentally watermark my only non-watermarked image.) The watermarked one is for posting online. The non-watermarked one is for my clients.

@rayg86 When I first started here I used a watermark but I would not use the Lightroom watermark and would just add a layer in photoshop, but then realised it was more of an effort to;
1. make two copies
2. go back and remove it.

Most times sites only have low/lower res images posted anyway and its not until you sell an image that the high res image is used for print.

Its like here @ 365 you can view other sizes but only Ace members can see and download their original high res version.
Depending on where you sell your images eg. Fine Art America place a watermark over the image for you.
Watermarks can be quite distracting as well.

All my export from Lightroom have the same watermark. This includes google plus, Facebook, Flickr.

The only real exception to take rule is on the website where clients can purchase the prints there thoses sits can eat mark if I chose. Ie. fineartamerica, www.brendanmaunder.com

My watermark is not to stop people copying the image but more to point people to the sites where they can purchase prints or digital downloads

I don't store water marked images I only store the orgials and let Lightroom watermark them when it publishes.

Does that help?

@rayg86 I don't use lightroom yet (really want to but havent' gotten to it!) but I do use bridge/photoshop.

Anything that gets posted to fb or here gets a watermark and is resized for web. I keep the original RAW/DNG and also upload a full sized image to my website that automagically adds a water mark. Photos ordered through my site are water mark free, but can't be printscreend or downloaded for free (unless I set permissions of course). For me it does take an extra step or two, but it makes it a tiny bit more secure.
www.photosbyneda.com there's a link to my fb page (or just search) if you want to see what I do.

Get yourself a portable drive for backup and don't delete anything :)

My software setting sends my watermarked pic to a separate folder, and always names it with the image title-new. It is a freeware Star Watermark

@rayg86 I use Lightroom, but I do my watermarking in Photoshop. In Photoshop you have more control over your watermark. You can resize it, give it color, or put it in any position you desire. It's not really time consuming (unless you're watermarking multiple photos) because you can open the picture in Photoshop from Lightroom. Then, when you save your picture, it automatically saves the picture as a separate copy in Lightroom. Then you can export both your watermarked and non-watermarked pictures.
