PS CS vs PSE 10

August 19th, 2012
I have an old version of PS CS which I like and use daily, although I'm only probably using a small part of the functionality. I like using layers, adjusting levels, etc. I'm wondering if using PSE 10 would be a step backwards for me. I use iPhoto and iMovie for organizing and storing pics and clips and I'm not interested in creating calendars and such. Any opinions appreciated, including an opinion on PSE 10 content aware capability [which my version of CS does not have]. Thank you.

Hi Anne, I use PSE10 and have been able to follow pretty much every PS CS photo-editing tutorial on You Tube that I've ever so far. It has layers, layer masks, blending modes, adjustment layers, distortion filters like liquefy etc.
Basically it has everything you need for basic to medium-advanced photo-editing. Where it falls short is imho is where photo-editing meets graphic design, e.g. it doesn't have the warp tool, and can't load any of the Pixel Bender plug-ins like Droste.

The content-aware fill on the panorama mode is pretty impressive - if your PC is up to it.

For info, I also quite happily use plug-ins like Silver Efex Pro 2 & Topaz Adjust with PSE10.
I've got quite 'into' photo editing since starting 365 - but I've not had any real desire to upgrade to full PS CS.

Have you looked at Adobe to see if you can upgrade your CS? I heard they were only going to allow upgrades from the previous version and I gorget when the cut off date is. If it is still before that date, then you might be able to upgrade CS. Have you looked for a meetup group in your area that is only focus on CS and PSE?

@sunnygreenwood - Hi Anne, I have PS 6 and it's all I will ever need. The newer the software, the more confusing it is for laypeople to figure out. I've not seen 10 so I can't make a judgement on it but I know I wouldn't go any newer for the small amount I use it.

Thanks for the info and comments everyone! Humphrey, I was hoping someone would say something like what you said. I think I'll give it a try. @humphreyhippo,

John, good ideas, the group meetups sound like fun. i'll watch out for something like that in the small towns around here. big city stuff doesn't interest me anymore, since I retired. i like the online tutorials too, and have picked up a lot of tips that way. @chapjohn

Bev, I'd be happy to pick up the new functionality of PSE, I'm just worried about losing some functionality if I switch from CS. Besides, I don't think you're easily confused!!! lol @carmichaelbev

@sunnygreenwood I think you can still get a trial version from Adobe's website if you want to have a look around before buying.
There are frequent promotions on Elements, so watch out for those if you do want to buy to.

All the keyboard shortcuts are the same btw. :)
