Back Focusing (not back button focusing)

September 17th, 2012
Has anyone ever had any dilemnas with their Nikon's back focusing? Eg. you select eye closest to you and instead eye behind or ear or hair is in focus and the face is not?

I am having a LOT of troubles with this, despite my best attempts at correcting it thinking its user error. It does not occur on my old D40, only on my D5100.

I've heard that this can be corrected by a service centre?

I should add sorry.. this is at apertures even of 3.5 and upwards not just shallow DOF problem.

not really, the only time that occurred was when I had the red dot to the left or right of my center focus... Operator error for me........
am curious though since I have a d5100 also.

I have a D5100 as well (...and a D40 too! :) ). I had this problem when I first got the camera. To fix I had to change the AF mode and focus mode to fit the situation I was shooting in. I do not know if you have tried this. I can only say what I did to fix it. What lens are you using? kit lens? Kit lenses are not known to be the best glass (lens). If you have a friend with a nikon dslr, ask to try their lens. I hope this helps. :)

Hi, I have suffered a bit of this on my Nikon D7000. Ive just adjused the focus on my 50mm f1.4 and that helped.

I had a problem with mine that was fixed by a Nikon service centre. All good now.

Ok, thanks guys. @cheribug I have tried using the centre cross hair instead, and it still occurs. @grif5332 I've tried all different modes, even auto select and I still struggle unfortunately, I have a 50 mm 1.8 but mainly use between 2.8 - 5

@wardie how did you adjust your focus? Does the 7000 have the option? Mine doesn't seem to?

@vorka I'm hopefully taking it to be looked at this week.. fingers crossed I can find what's going on

@mandiijones Hi Mandii, yes the D7000 has the option to adjust per lens

The D7000 has a known back focus problem. One of the first things to try is to reset all the shooting options. You could try starting there, as well. I know that if you do a search for D7000, back focus, and shooting options you'll find the instructions. I would assume it would be similar to the process for the D5100. You may also be able to find instructions specifically for the D5100.

Thanks @cmc1200 Its not long been in for repairs (had a different problem) and everything was reset then.

I've sent it off today to the Nikon repairer.. fingers crossed I can get it sorted.

I thought I would update you guys. I got my camera back and I am so happy with how it is focusing now. If it helps anyone else they adjusted the auto focus unit and recollimated reflex optics?

Just so much happier now, its like someone has given me glasses!
