Someone gave me a Pixel TW-282 RF remote as a Christmas gift and I have spent the last 5 days trying to get it to work with my D5100 without any luck ~ I have searched google, you tube and even resorted to reading the manual that came with it ~ I can get both the transmitter and receiver to flash red, but it is not activating my cameras shutter release. I have tried remote and hard wired modes still no luck ~ I have also used a different lead just in case that was the problem. I have tried S mode to which my camera says bulb mode is not available in S mode and have tried M mode on bulb settings, tried live view and non live view ~~ have I missed something? or do you think there is a 'real' technical problem?
It was bought as a gift in Sweden ~ I am in the UK ~ not thinking that this would be the problem but ...
PLEASE PLEASE HELP! Anyone !! :-) ~ I am hoping it is just my incompetence and not the unit
That was what got me. Also that the remote did much less than I expected. Does it work in all camera modes? Final thought check battery and maybe try a new one?
@godders I wanted it mainly to use bulb mode for night shots / light painting ... there are new batteries in all units ~ perhaps I will change them just incase ... I cannot get it to open my shutter in any mode :(
@alisonp I just found this which suggests things to check without adhering to camera models.
You normally have to set the camera to accept the remote signal. This can be found sometimes with the drive modes or self-timer, it really depends on your model.
Once the camera is ready. Aim at one of the IR receptors and click the release. Some cameras have a front receptor, some have a back one and some have both. Look for what looks like a small very dark window.
The camera can be in any mode and it will take the shot accordingly. Most models will not autofocus when used with the remote, some will let you specify this as an custom setting.
Bulb mode either works by holding the release the whole time (which IMO is silly) or by clicking at the beginning and end of the internal. A few DSLRs allow both and the behavior is chosen via a custom setting.
@godders@aspada thank you both, I set the self timer and it is now working :-)))) ... albeit only with the remote handheld unit wired into the camera ~ there appears to be a fault with the wireless part [reciever] of the unit ... phew! maybe a new battery may sort that problem [when I get one] ~~ or there will be a fault with it anyways ~ I cannot believe I spent so long trying to sort this out and a few minutes discussion and it is sorted :D ~ thank you both so much for your help :D

I just put my shutter release on remote and held down my button.
