This is a shot I took today of my daughter which I really like EXCEPT for the fact that leaving her out of focus seems to have given her scary, shadowy eyes.
I'm still pretty much a newbie with PS so anything I tried just seemed to make it worse. Any of you seasoned veterans have any tricks up your sleeve to fix something like this?
In my opinion, since she isn't the subject of the photo, I think it's fine. It doesn't look scary or shadowy to me. It just looks like she is looking downward. It's a nice shot of the books. Nice focus.
In all seriousness, I think the best that can probably be done here is to lighten the eye area a little. I've done this very quickly by using a curves adjustment layer and masking it to only affect the eyes -- it's not great, but it takes some of the shadows away and softens the image a little.
@mandyj92 Thanks, that's kind of what I was thinking at first, but I think it's just one of those things where once you notice something that bothers you, you can't stop noticing it.
@abirkill Haha, thanks for that! Though those googly eyes are pretty awesome, not exactly the effect I was going for. lol
Thanks for the serious suggestion as well.
@abirkill Oh, poor Edith! And Lisa, keep trying! I am a PS newbie and it can be frustrating but also very rewarding when you get what you want from the program. Lovely subject too :)
@futbolinq@abirkill Until I saw Alexis' edit (the second one... :-D ) the original seemed more than fine. Does your daughter have long dark eyelashes or something?
@Cheesebiscuit No, they're not really that dark or long. Not sure why her eyes ended up so shadowy. Maybe just because she was looking down? Also wondering if maybe I should have angled my speedlite a bit instead of pointing it straight up at the ceiling to get a bit more light on her?
Thanks to all for the response. Sounds like maybe I was picking my work apart too much (as I often do).
(My apologies to @futbolinq, and inspired by this...)
