Do yourself a favour - buy a new cross body (sling)camera strap

January 30th, 2013
Why didnt someone show me these YEARS ago?? If like me you half dislocate your shoulder when trying to take that quick must-have shot due to the kit strap that comes with your DSLR I cant recommend highly enough investing in a cross body camera strap. I finally got one for Christmas and I am kicking myself for not having got one ages ago.

Cheap as chips on amazon:

I use the black rapids RS-7 and love it to bits. I was suffering with neck pain from the weight of the camera for long periods of time when doing photo shoots!

I have one too and it is amazing. I do a lot of hiking and I was afraid that my camera would slip off my shoulder and crash on some rocks.

I wonder if a sling camera strap would be a bit more protection from someone doing a snatch and run on a busy street.

I have one and will never go back to the neck strap. It's secure on your body, easy to get out of your way when bending down to do something, always in a ready position by your hand and easy on the neck.

I have something similar for my binoculars - makes a difference on the neck when I'm doing long walks - the binos sit in place and are ready for immediate use.

I have one, too and its a relief for the neck and makes a quick shot easier. But its a lot of less handy when you take it of or when you wnt your camera quickly on a tripod.

Have one and LOVE it!! Beats the camera bouncing off my chest all the time! lol

you'd have to pry my Black Rapid strap from my cold, dead hands.

So I've usually got a dog lead in one hand. Will this stop the constant problem I have of the strap falling in front of the view finder? Thanks.
January 30th, 2013
@judithg Yes, these straps are really good when you've loads of other things to carry!

I don't understand. Isn't it tne same as putting the regular camera strap across your shoulder so that the camera is then sitting on the opposite hip? I'm really missing the point here, i can tell. But what is the point?

@juliehill Thanks!

@judithg YES! I use the Blackrapid sport slim version and LOVE it! It's made a little smaller for women. The kit strap was painful and got in the way. Walking the dog and taking pics is much easier and way more comfortable.

@cameronknowlton lol! me too

@happysnap, the camera hangs by its tripod mount, and can slide up the strap when you need it, then slide back down. you can lock it in place in both forward and reverse directions, to keep it in place if you're moving around a lot. it changed my shooting overnight.

I attach my Manfrotto mount to my camera, so I can quickly and easily switch between the Black Rapid strap and my tripod as needed.

@happysnap I wrest my camera that way and it works for me. I guess it wouldn't for everyone though as the neck straps might not go long enough for everyone to do that comfortably.

I have a Sun Sniper-Strap One (without steel) and love it. --> http://www.sun-sniper.com/the-one.html

@aponi
The SNIPER-STRAP "THE PRO" - Steel & Bear have steel built in the strap and is more secure. --> http://www.sun-sniper.com/sniper-strap-the-pro-steel-bear.html

@twocups Thanks... didn't know such things existed.Recently got my first dslr and have noticed the huge difference in weight/bulk compared to my little P&S! It's on my wish list now :)

I hate neck straps, the material on them is awful and they are so uncomfortable. I have a sling and it is so much more comfortable to shoot all day. No more neck ache or that irritating material rubbing on your neck :D

@happysnap the key with this kind of strap is the camera is not statically attached- it can slide up and down the strap. So when you reach down and lift the camera up to your eye the strap stays in place. When you drop the camera it slides back to your side.

It really is so simple yet so amazingly better. I don't know why they don't ship like this.

By far the best value extra!

I have this one by Gordy's and I love it! I have a light Micro Four Thirds -camera and Gordy's simple leather strap is perfect for that.

The sling-straps feel better for my back, too. Used to feel it in my spine after a couple of hours with DSLR hanging in front.

By the way, on the subject of straps, anyone know of a good way to carry a tripod around - hands free ( until you need it)? Thanks, Linda
January 31st, 2013
I have been using a sling for a while now and i will never go back it just so comfortable compared to the kneck strap @happysnap Linda you can get a similar sling for your tripod as well when not in use just sling it onto your back out of the way you can get them fairly cheap on amazon..

Love mine too! especially as it hasn't got Canon splattered all over it....don't get me wrong..I ADORE my Canon, but don't want to advertise what I own and doesn't it make it SO easy for someone to track you in a crowd :( so, black rapid you are the best, I feel safer
