Exposing for a television?

February 2nd, 2013
I'm trying to photograph my new television which is on the wall while it's turned on, but also include the electricals around the TV like speakers and PS3.
Can anyone think of a way to get this exposed properly without having the TV blown out and the speakers etc. under exposed?
(Should I have the light on/off, use a flash?)

HDR is the way to go... take multiplle shots, and merge them in Photomatix (for example). The alternative is a custom gel, but that's old school silliness now that HDR exists.

Cameron is right, the obvious solution is to use a HDR post processing technique to blend 2 or more images, since the difference in brightness between the two is quite significant under normal lighting. If you don't fancy HDR, I'd say, turn the TV brightness down a bit, and light the surroundings quite brightly, a large lamp or bright room lights etc. That way you will reduce the difference in required exposure for the lit screen and dark surroundings and you may be able to expose it all correctly in one shot.

I tried the HDR method with just 2 exposures. This is a very rushed and lazy attempt, but thought you'd like to see the results.

(Poor quality due to Facebook)

The room was pitch black, but I think with effective lighting this could work. Thanks again for tips :)
