I have two fairly cheap card readers and they have both given up on me today. There are so many on the market that I am not sure which one to choose next. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, reliable card reader please
Are you sure they have both failed on the same day? Could it be that the card itself, or perhaps the USB connection (or whatever you are using) hasn't give up the ghost?
I picked one up at Best Buy for around $10 just so I could download pictures I take while I'm at work. I think its a sandisk but I'm not really sure. I think maybe cheesebiscuit is onto something though, you might want to check out a different card or connection with it.
@Cheesebiscuit no, it is definitely the card readers - one of them has a bent pin and the other just won't work. but I have managed to upload via my camera (a much slower method ) so I know the card/cable are ok
Using various types of SanDisk no problems ever. Also have have a Lexar which had a bent pin and I managed to put it back into place with a wooden tooth pick.
I have a handful of SD cards (mostly Sandisk), and rotate them on a regular basis. I reformat completely before using them, and the moment I have an upload issue, it's gone.
I do have an issue with them being slow, and would like to follow the thread for recommendations for what to look for in a faster SD card. @stoat
I think card readers have a life. they just wear out with use. and i think they are making them that way on purpose so they can sell more. my old card reader lasted for years, the new one is wearing out quickly. i am not usually one to suspect conspiracies (LOL) but it seems weird.
@khirsch thanks but I tried that but it didn't work unfortunately @welcometocarolworld if you are uploading straight from your camera, that will always be a slower way. My problem is with a broken card reader @mwbc I think you're right !
If you're on this site, you likely use a card reader at least several times a week. Get a good quality *brand name* card reader. It will be faster and more durable than any knock-off unit from the grocery store!
I have a Sandisk multi-card reader that I've been using for *years* and it still works. It's taken a beating and looks like like it's been through the war. Cards and cables still seat firmly and I've never had a problem with it.
Can you not take the pictures straight from the camera to your PC. Therefore no need for card reader. My suggestion is perhaps a trip to a local photo shop to discuss with them.
I always buy cheap ones now and I have bought both cheap and not so cheap and they both only last so long, the one I have now was only a few euro, Manhatton, and has lasted the longest so far.
@4umfreak thank you yes its looking like sandisk is the way to go @padlock taking pictures straight from camera is ok if you only have a few but would have been a nightmare last weekend when I was downloading 800 images from a wedding shoot - it makes it very slow
@padlock I have a laptop that only has one reader and a camera with two types of memory cards that do not fit the one on the laptop, so that is not always the answer for some cameras
@welcometocarolworld Carol...I know you should buy Class 10 for photos...also look at their ratings..30 mb/s is good as on the SanDisk Ultra...SDHS...they load images fast from your camera and onto your computer (so long as your computer is up to date). About readers...I don't know...I use the one built into my Mac.
I have one that is a multi card reader and was just bought from a photo shop. My choice was made by the types of card it would read as I seemed to be picking up lots of kit all with different formats.
