Ring Flash

April 27th, 2013
Amy
I think I need a ring flash light.

In fact, the more I Google, the more I'm sure I might die if I don't buy one.

Has anyone got any advice on using one, handy tips or ticks, or preferably, terrible photographs and horror stories to put me off buying one? :P

I have one but rarely use it lol. I actually haven't ever used it as a flash, but have as a light... I used it here to backlight at 1/4 strength... http://365project.org/ozziehoffy/365/2013-04-19 ... it's sitting at around 7/8ish o'clock about 30cm roughly away.

Like @ozziehoffy , I also have one but barely use it. Maybe I haven't learned how to take full advantage of it, but when I do actually use it, I think it makes a world of difference. Here is the last one I used it for:

@grizzlysghost lol yeah there's that too! I think I'm just really used to using natural light 99% of the time. Cute little critter though :)

Nooooooo!!!!! I'm still waiting for the last thing you persuaded me to buy to be delivered. Don't show me anything else!

you just might die if you don't get one. really.....

I felt the same way, but this is the only one I've used it on so far. However, my plan was to use it for bugs and critters and the macro -- and its been winter -- no bugs/critters around. So, I'm hoping to get some more use out of it.

Oh, and I bought a super cheapy one on Amazon.

I have a book on macro photography and clearly I need this ring flash that I've never heard of before getting that book too.

@nicolaeastwood I don't know what it is either, but it sounds rude.

Excuse me, just off to "browse by tag" :-P

What does a "ring flash" do that just a regular flashlight won't?? I have played with taking my photos in a dark room using only a flashlight. The effect is unique. Try it!! Use your tripod cause you'll find you don't have enough hands. =)

@amyamoeba Ohhhhh, thanks for the idea, I needed something to put on my birthday wish list!

@mary1440 Interesting. Maybe I will try that later today. I've put on a baseball cap and used a clamp light attached to that but had not thought about a flashlight in a dark room. I'm just running out now to look at your project to see if I can spot the flashlight in a dark room photos. I'll be back soon :)

Ah yes, much enlightened now....thank you all. @amyamoeba the only problem is every time Amy posts something here it seems to cost me money!! Have only just managed to stop my hubby shaking his head about the backdrop....... :0)

I got one from eBay awhile ago. Just another tool in the kit I guess. I use it for my low-key table top photography.
