Frozen Bubbles - Photos, Tips and Tricks

January 8th, 2014
Since freezing bubbles seems to be a hot trend for the past three days here on 365, I thought we could take the time to share our photos and any tips or tricks used to get a good shot.

I could not find a way to stop the wind from tossing them around earlier today, and while watching the float off and then shatter was fun, it was not an easy photo op.

Instead, I took to a quieter evening shot using the porch outside Christmas lights as a bokeh backdrop.

I blew the bubble and then caught it again on the wand to give it time to freeze. In this photo you can see the frost "finger print" emerging.

I found it you moved the wand too quickly, the bubble shattered and I had to start again.

Please pile on by sharing your photo and any tips for getting a great shot!

I've been wanting to try out frozen bubbles for quite a while. I was excited about our frigid weather this week, and knew I would have the chance finally. It's been the right temperature, but has been too windy. I struggled with most of my bubbles popping quickly. I learned to hold the bubble on the wand and wait for it to freeze. Yesterday I had no success, but finally today I was able to freeze a few, but they all shattered. This is the only one I could get that remained intact. Hoping to try again tomorrow. It won't be as cold, but I'm hoping the wind will be still. I used store bought bubble solution, not homemade.

As we're suffering with flooding here rather than freezing weather I decided to try this by freezing the bubbles in my freezer...it didn't work ;o) It would be fantastic to have the cold weather to give it a proper go. @swguevin @grapefruit both these shots are beautiful.

It's cold enough here but way too windy. I did try yesterday but then I had bubbles blowing over and sticking on the neighbours kitchen window. I spotted her looking at her window then moving away. Next thing she was out the side door and walking to the window to look. By this time I was hiding behind the tree and our fence and keeping very quiet :) I knew she was looking to see if I was in the yard doing something crazy so I waited for her to go back inside then I very quickly crept along the fence and around to the side gate and out of the yard :) I will try but maybe in the front yard. It's still a little windy but the temperatures are still good. Heading into a big warm up by the weekend though :( If school is out again today then I will get the kids from across the street to come help out. Maybe if we can blow enough bubbles we will get some to freeze. I used a bubble gun yesterday for my attempt but it was so cold I ended up with the stuff freezing and the battery dying :)

Here's my post on the subject. These were done around 0F but will be trying again if the temperature ever moderates. http://www.boostyourphotography.com/2014/01/bubbles.html

An imperfect one that floated on air, rolled around on my deck and then finally deflated its last breath.

I can't wait to try this. Hopefully it will be cold enough at the weekend.

My less than stellar attempt is below. I had the same issue with wind so I think I'll give your idea about catching on the wand a try. It's getting warmer here today so they might not freeze. :(

Bubbles are tricky at the best of times. I never thought of freezing them If we ever get snow this year I might try this!

What a lovely idea. I don't think it's cold enough here to try it.

Doubt if I could ever freeze a bubble in Queensland!! They are so beautiful, just like all the snow flake shots posted on this site - we just don't see these type of things so it is a great way to explore photography we miss out on here in the hotter land!
