At my school were having a photo competion to win a prize . the competion is divided into 4 catagries - landscape - portrait -animal-unusal/abstracts . im unsure what to do for the landscape one i already know what to do for animal and ive already got an idea for portrait. my ict teacher reconds i should use my 'fly me to the moon' for the unusal but i dont know whether it would fall in that cartagory. and im also torn between what to do for my animal either 'poor pelicon' or 'meow' . you are only aloud to enter 1 photo per catagory .. HELPP pleasee

Hi Ashleigh. If you copy the photos you are thinking of onto this thread I am sure lots of people will tell you what they think. Go to the photo and click on the three dots bottom right the copy the 'embed code' and paste it here.

Your image "Fly me to the Moon" should fit the category of unusual very well... it's a great shot, perfectly timed!

And for animals I think your "Poor Pelican" is better, because you have focused perfectly on the eye of the bird, and getting the eye in focus is always one of the most important things in animal photography!

As for what to do for the landscape one... look through some of the photo's on this site, they might give you some very good ideas!

Good luck with the competition!!! :)

I agree with the fyl me to the moon.
Maybe a stronger edit on this for the landscape:

Good luck!

Hello Asheigh, one the best things you can do is to study the photogrpahy of others who published one the subject matter you are interested in. This would include photographers of previous generations and current photographers. This will help you discern good composition from the ordinary. Look at both color and B&W/monochrome images. Look for tones/shadows/and the emotions/story of each image.

Have you considered this shot of yours "Bye, bye, sun" for the landscape? I love the soft, faded colors and edge you've put on it. The horizon looks a wee bit tilted so you might try straightening it. But overall I think it's lovely.

This one is also a very nice landscape. Really beautiful curving lines:

Best of luck in the contest!

You know, I could put up a photo a mountain or a lake but would it inspire you? Don't know. What I do know is that you have ask yourself what about an image of a landscape inspires you. Do you ever just stop and look at a sunset? Do you notice the color it casts on the land? The shadows on small hills always capture my attention. What captures your eye? Yes, you know. All you have to do is trust yourself and you will be fine. No matter what we suggest here, it's still your vision that will make or break the photo. It's the same for everyone. Now, think about what draws you to the landscape.

As for choosing between photos, ask several people to look at them and tell you why it's better than the other. Listen to what they say and don't take it personally. Pull the constructive critiquing from them and then make an educated guess. Good luck!!!!
