Help please on PSE9 clone and partially locked layering problem

September 28th, 2014
I am trying to get to grips with Photoshop elements 9. When I use the clone stamp the actions are not showing on the shot but they are recorded in the edit history as having taken place. I am cloning on the shot itself. Tried making a duplicate layer and cloning onto that but same thing happens. Also the shot itself is showing as "layer partially locked" whether its the sole layer or the background layer to a background copy. Does that have anything to do with it? And even if it doesn't, how can I unlock it. Tried help and on net etc but havnt managed to find the right information. Any advice would really be appreciated.

Hi there ...

It sounds like the clone tool mode may have been changed. Select the clone tool then look at the top of the screen and change the Mode to Normal. That should sort it out

The background layer being locked is nothing to do with it ... background layers usually are. To unlock it simply double click on the thumbnail (in the layers palette) and a box will pop up asking for a new name for the layer. Just click on OK and your layer will now be unlocked.

@adambralston Hi Adam, thanks for your time and help. Have unlocked layer as you suggested. The Clone tool doesn't have a normal in mode but lots of choices. After trial and error I think I need to set it to overlay to cover area to clone. Will work at this. Thanks.

Hi Jen , I have 11, so it may be different. What I find I do accidentally sometimes is I am on the wrong layer. The blend mode shouldn't be that particular if you are on the proper layer. Check that the layer you are cloning on is the one you have highlighted.

@tigerdreamer Hi Karen, many thanks for your reply and help which has made me check out the layering steps. I think I am on the right one as it opens as thumbnail as background and is locked. When I double click on that it gives me the choice for it to become layer 0. I can then start working in it. The difference I think is that on the layer bar if does read normal mode. However on the top lh bar in main screen there is no normal against mode. Just the choices such as darken, lighten etc. I have however managed to clone out a figure in a shot. My friend has PS11 and says it is more user friendy. She is coming over at the weekend so armed with my mew knowledge we will investigate further. I think the latest PS13 could be on Xmas lst! Once agIn many thanks. So appreciate the help here, even if problem not totally solved you certainly get pointed in the right direction.
