Help shooting long exposures

November 7th, 2014
Lately I've been getting into trying out long exposures, whenever I get to the beach I love to give it a go, previously I've done 5 min and I've tried 10 minutes. However after calculating the correct length of time for an exposure to last 10 minutes, shooting in live time, my camera ends the exposure automatically at 7 min. and my shots come out underexposed, every time I've tried a shot upwards of 10 min. this happens, does anyone know why this keeps happening, I've looked at my manual, I've looked online and I can't find the answer to this question, so any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

What camera do you use?

@hrethric
I have an olympus om-d em-5, four thirds camera

Is this happening every time you try? Are you giving the camera a rest between long exposures? Sensors generate heat when the shutter is open, so it's possible it's overheating. Off the top of my head that's the only thing I can think of, but it *shouldn't* be overheating for an exposure of that length. You may need to contact Olympus about this issue. :-/

I see from the manual (page 89) that you can "Choose the maximum exposure for bulb and time photography". I have no idea how you do that but has this value been set previously and your seven minutes is due to this?

The default setting for the BULB/TIME Timer is 8 minutes, so you're probably hitting that. You can change it in the EXP/ISO settings.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, it turned out it was set to an 8 min timer, I guess it came that way, I'm so glad it's not broke, thanks for the help :)

@creampuff @abirkill @nikkilee - Glad the others helped you to figure it out! I couldn't find anything about a default time when doing a search either.

When doing long exposures like that make sure you rest about a minute between shots to give your sensor time to cool down. That's something I didn't know until recently, so I figured I'd pass it on. :)
