Tip for Windows users who do self portraits

January 6th, 2016
Last night I came across a free downloadable program that allows you connect your camera so that your computer monitor live views what the camera sees. You can also auto focus via the computer and capture the photo via the computer (although I believe you can still use a remote if you have one.) Also, you can delay the photo so that you have time to get into position for the photo.

I don't do a lot of self portraits, but I would be more willing to explore them now that I can have a bit of confidence that I won't have to send guess if my camera, or myself are in the right position nor will I have to take 9879878789 shots until I get a decent one.

This link specifically goes to the portion of the website that details what specific cameras are compatible with this program. And again, this is only for WINDOWS.

Thank you @mej2011 ! It would be interesting if other users could post what they use on other operating systems.

Those of you that use Lightroom can shoot "tethered." But for those of us that don't use it, thanks for the link.

@laetitiapetrussa
Hopefully others will chime in here as I obviously don't know much about these types of programs.

@sketch2
You're welcome. I'm using a Nikon D3200, so I was glad to see that particular series of camera supported.

@frankhymus
I was not aware of Lightroom's capabilities. Good to keep in mind if I ever want to use something other than Photoshop Elements 12, so thanks for that information.

@laetitiapetrussa Lightroom, like I mentioned above.

Canon cameras come with software that allows you to shoot tethered... But mostly I just rely on my camera screen which flips around and the remote :)

Seems none of my cameras are supported, too old i guess.

I use the Canon software (Digital Photo Professional) that comes with the camera, hook it up and shoot, done tons of self portraits like that.
Great for shooting at f2.8 and hitting the focus on the eyes.

@newbank
May be one solution to your focusing on the eyes problem?
