Last night I came across a free downloadable program that allows you connect your camera so that your computer monitor live views what the camera sees. You can also auto focus via the computer and capture the photo via the computer (although I believe you can still use a remote if you have one.) Also, you can delay the photo so that you have time to get into position for the photo.
I don't do a lot of self portraits, but I would be more willing to explore them now that I can have a bit of confidence that I won't have to send guess if my camera, or myself are in the right position nor will I have to take 9879878789 shots until I get a decent one.
This link specifically goes to the portion of the website that details what specific cameras are compatible with this program. And again, this is only for WINDOWS.
@frankhymus
I was not aware of Lightroom's capabilities. Good to keep in mind if I ever want to use something other than Photoshop Elements 12, so thanks for that information.
@northy i didn't know this and i have two canon's (no idea where the software is ) maybe ill download it later (not at a computer now)
Seems none of my cameras are supported, too old i guess.
I use the Canon software (Digital Photo Professional) that comes with the camera, hook it up and shoot, done tons of self portraits like that.
Great for shooting at f2.8 and hitting the focus on the eyes.
Hopefully others will chime in here as I obviously don't know much about these types of programs.
You're welcome. I'm using a Nikon D3200, so I was glad to see that particular series of camera supported.

May be one solution to your focusing on the eyes problem?
