i am going to do a shoot for a fund raiser in a few weeks, and considering a couple different options for lighting. i will be set up in an 8x8 room, shooting the people thru the doorway and the background is a green screen. using an eye-fi card to transfer pics to another area to have room to work and print them.
my concern is lighting. there is not a lot of room and i am thinking of using Photo Fluorescent bulbs, 2 of them with probably umbrellas, or possibly small 16x16 or 20x20 softboxes. the other option is using 2 sunpak 611's with softboxes on them. i have ZERO experience with the fluorescent bulbs, i have always used strobe setups, the small room will give me plenty of light from the two sunpaks so i don't have to break out the big strobes.
does anyone know if using fluorescent bulbs in that setup be a good idea? or umbrella or softbox? with not having played with the fluorescent i am not sure. the cost looks pretty cheap for two with mounts - already have the stands, umbrellas and softboxes.
I haven't had a problem with them. I think they are less total output than my 160W strobes, but then again I've only used the flourescents three times so far.
i have used the cfl with some success. I prefer softbox and strobe... I recently shot in a room about the same size, I used one 800 watt strobe, reflector and umbrella...
i would normally just grab my calumet 750's but due to space on where i am having to mount my lights it is sadly not an option. the shot by Joshua Post looks like the Fluorescents might work, the prints i am making are going to be 4x6 so i can prob bump up to 800 to get a bit better light. jordan- i like the edges in the image here
@killerjackalope that was my biggest concern - i just got off the phone with a company that sells kits, and they suggested 2- 4 bulb softbox kits but i would need to have the lights 6 feet away or less to get good skin tone because they didn't throw light very well. i am wondering if that might have been just to purchase a higher kit based on what you are telling me, which wouldn't surprise me. their next suggestion was 2 7 bulb kits, priced much higher.
@cchambers I actually had normal consumer ones for offices in softboxes and a single bulb @22W was giving out enough to be good, two a piece would certainly be enough to do most jobs.
The sunlight ones marketed for offices were an awesome find as they have the right colour temp and come in all socket varieties.
One great thing for light diffusion I picked up was a couple of giant "icecube" lamps, I replaced the standard bulb and fitting with a house one and sunlight bulbs for macros and lighting corners...
@killerjackalope that is great news - i think i will pick up a couple 45w bulbs and pick up a couple clip lamps to make mounting easier and more options with them. as a side note - neat instructables you have up

Hopefully it all gets sorted in time...

the shoot is not for 3 weeks, so even if i can't find the bulbs or lamps in town i should have time for ordering.
Ah that's good then, no desperate rushing then.
