How do you overexpose with a P&S?

February 23rd, 2011
I have a simple P&S camera, I'm happy with it, but I find this theme hard.
Does anybody know how to make over-exposed portraits with a simple P&S? I tried for a moment, but it came nothing near what I wanted.
Do I have to use a lot of light or change the iso?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Try putting it in program mode and finding the exposure compensation. You should be able to find this in the user manual. Then set it to overexpose by one ore two stops, or until it turns out the way you want it to. Hope this helps.

@natew214 Thanks, I'll try that! I'm looking at the exifs on the other pictures for this theme now, and they gave me an idea too.

your pns might autobalance everything by basing all info on what you first initially focus on... sooooo, if you are taking a shot of something that has a reasonable flat focal plane, then point your pns at the darkest part of the image. The sensor will compensate for this darkness, and then while still half-pressing on the shutter, move your camera to your composition and take the shot. The dark bits will be in good light and the light bits will be over exposed!

does this make sense?

@bobfoto It definately makes sense! I do that when the auto-balance is to bright or to dark, but I didn't think of doing that on purpose, silly me! Thanks for the advise!

@geertje - good luck with the theme! Hope it works for you... try a bright light on a dark object and use my technique to see if you can really glare up the image?

Or you could do it in your editing software... I shoot most of my stuff normally ( though I use a dslr on man settings ) so that I have variety of options when it comes to editing. IF you dont have editing software, have a play with picnik.com its a good place for noobs to learn about certain elemants and has adjusters to learn to play with!! GL and have fun!

@bobfoto @natew214 Thanks you guys! I tried and this is the result of today:

I did tweek the exposure and did focus on the dark background and it worked!

@kick_the_cow I did edit it a bit in picnik too, but my shot was already over-exposed, and I like it.

Good shot you got ;-) @bobfoto is heaps helpful huh :-)

My suggestion would have been to edit, i did one this way, a selfie early in my calendar, i'm on my phone so its too difficult to post the link, but if you go back you'll spot it easy lol.

:-D

I think you ment this one:
I see what you mean, but I always like to do a theme not only with editing...

@geertje Thanks for asking this question Geertje.... I was wondering the same thing. @natew214 @bobfoto @kick_the_cow @taidster And thank you to all our fellow 365ers for being so helpful.

@bobfoto's idea woks, used to do that with my p&s, also works on landscapes of add a bit more interest into a sky.

@pete21 - Peter is right... if you want your sunsets, more red(der) then half press the shutter while pointing at the reddest part, and then compose the shot, and press trigger all the way. The camera will try to auto-whitebalance everything depending on that first "half press".

Try it on different parts of the sunset and you will get all shades of orange and red!
