ah right, You will find you will get better DOF using the Aperture Priority mode. A-Dep is not an easy mode to use, and in fact has been rendered useless by Canon and they have stopped including it in their professional series.
If you want a shallow DOF use a big aperture which is a low f-stop if you want a big DOF use a small aperture which is a higher f-stop.
Also with the A-dep mode, the camera tries to find all the focus points to get the right DOF, which slows everything down, you can select your focus points by using the magnifying glass buttons on the back I believe...also I find using manual focus gets the DOF I want rather than what the AF wants.
The 50mm is a great lens, is it not focusing at all or only on AF mode?
Thanks guys, I've tried getting through a basic guide, but I prefer to play around with the camera :) @sburbidge@triptych_angel So steer clear of A-dep?
I like the effect I get with it, as far as I can tell, it's the setting where I can get some nice depth of field into my pictures.

This is probably why I was liking the 50mm f1.8 lens (until it stopped focusing)

I mainly use AV and M but always keep my camera on P just in case I need to get the camera out for a quick shot I wont miss it!
