I use a Canon 350D, I know it is getting a little old now but I have no plans on upgrading (1 because of the cost, 2. I haven't reached the limitations as to what this camera can do and 3. I love it!) but I was wondering if I can use RAW format on it and if so, does anyone know how to change it?
I've had a look through the menu settings and if it is there I am overlooking it.
@emmar84. While I may not know this answer for sure I think the answer is no you cannot. If you camera does not have the ability to capture in RAW, you may not be able to have a true conversion. From what I have been told RAW is a way that your camera captures a digital image and holds the necessary information. You should check the manual online to see if it is an option.
Like Rachael (above), I'm a Nikonian, but it should be in your menu under an item that describes image size and quality. In my Nikon, the menu item is called "Image Quality". You need to change wherever it's got jpg as the selection to RAW.
I've got the 450D. RAW isnt an option if you are shooting on 'auto' but if you change to 'P' mode and go into the quality settings it should be there if the camera has the capabilites. Once you switch to RAW you wont go back ( I use RAW + JPEG on my P setting so I can see the jpegs immediately). You have so much more control with raw in post processing, and you'll be amazed at difference in quality and even colour between the same shot in raw and jpeg.
Just cant wait until I can lift my 450 again (just had surgery) - I miss it!
My camera, the Nikon P100, which is not a DSLR, only allows three settings in the Image Quality menu; Fine, Norm and Basic. RAW unfortunately is not available. If you have a RAW setting on your camera, from what I've read, it gives you more control and latitude in post production. Have fun.
I've been wanting to try the RAW setting on my camera, but I wasn't too sure what the purpose of it was. I think this kind of answers my question......
@emmar84 you might be able to still use APerture or Shutter priority settings, probably not program mode. Still, like you said, a great opportunity to have fun in the RAW! heh.
This should help explain the process of RAW to JPEG

Also here is a discussion if there is a software process to help you.

Thank you for your replies, after trying Lucy and Johns advice I can use raw in the manual settigns. All the more reason to become confident using manual :)
