Best format to upload

March 16th, 2011
I currently shoot in RAW and just learned of this site. I would love to upload a photo a day but was wondering what's the best format to do it in? Keep it in RAW? Or the highest Jpg possible?

I shoot in raw, edit and then transpose to jpeg using photo shop. My file size is normally 11 and I don't lose much detail

@ponyoandi You can't upload a RAW file. When shooting RAW it means you have to process the photos yourself and save them as a Jpeg to be able to upload them. You don't necessarily need the highest file size Jpeg either, I try to keep mine around a megabyte and it's plenty for this sight. Hope this helps

I started shooting in RAW, but I suggest saving in .PNG. Jpeg looses quality and can distort the image. PNG keeps the high quality appearance. I have used it for my photos and art for years and have always suggested it.

Don't use PNG either, that's overkill. JPG is perfectly fine for a site such as this.

I agree PNG is such an overkill if you just want to post it in the web. I Shoot RAW, JPEG for web posting and TIFF for printing.

720 X 720 pixels is the perfect size for web posting.

@eyebrows - nerd. ;-P

Keep the original/edited RAW files, but you have to upload as .jpg (lower case) here.
I aim for a file size of 1 to 1.4 Mb that is plenty big enough for this site.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I will definitely use jpg since it is enough for web. But will start looking into PNG and TIFF for other things.

Anyone know why my EXIF info doesn't show up in my uploads? I edit in Photoshop and when I save it just goes away.

@ponyoandi I believe it is because you are shooting converting it from RAW to JPG. I am not an expert but I remember seeing something about this in another post a few weeks back.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

It's most likely if you're doing "save for web" @ponyoandi , there's probably an option in there to retain the EXIF info though. Or just save it out regularly, rather than the "for web" route.

I've actually just been saving via "save as" Didn't think to look for save EXIF info in that option. I will look again when I get home tonight. Running CS5, just in case it helps anyone.
