So, my family would love to have portraits at the beach this week while we're there. I'm curious if anyone has some tips for it? I'm thinking around 7 p.m. heading down there and shooting until the sun is gone. I don't have too much in the way of professional equipment...just a Rebel XTi and I do have a 270EX Speedlite flash if that'll help. I WILL use the tripod and shoot in Raw. Any other tips? How about editing in Lightroom? Something specific and special I should do?
If the rebel allows....try zooming in on the face, spot metering, and locking in that exposure before re-composing the image. This would hopefully allow for more natural tones and that are often blown out by the harsh bright light reflected off the sand and water.
If you want to get good color in the sky, underexpose by a stop or two to darken the background. I'd suggest using manual mode. Leave the flash on and get the background looking nice. Then turn on the flash to light your subjects.
While the sun is still bright, have them turn their back to the sun and use flash if necessary to brighten their face and eyes.
Google "sunset" and "dragging the shutter" and you may find some good information.
