I got some info on my Grandfather emailed to me today from Find My Past. This photo of him came too...any hints & tips on the best way to restore it??? Or should I leave it as it is??? I can't decide if restoring it would improve it or not.
are you going to get printed original? if you're just "restoring" a digital version, just make sure you save your files with a different name than the original and you can have as many versions as you want. :)
i personally would leave it as-is, but you could play with some of the black spots a bit to remove them (clone/heal)
@sdpace unfortunately the site doesn't offer printed originals so that is not an option. I would like to print this one out though. So it will be just "restoring" the digital version, thanks so much for your input...I think you are right about the as is, just not sure what will happen when I print it out...oh well, only one way to find out I suppose.
Try Noiseware or Noise Ninja for a start. There are some blown highlights there you could probably regain with a fill layer and blend mode, or even a texture to resemble skin textures (or at least, hide the fact that there aren't any). The black spots, of course, can be cloned out like SPace said. It's going to take some careful dodging and burning (using layer masks - not the dodge and burn tools) to bring it up to print quality. Just work slowly, and retain working copies with layers intact so you can go back a step or two when you need to. You'll need some time and patience, but it looks quite doable.
@ronphotography@jinximages@meshinka thanks for your input everyone...I'm going to give it a go at some stage, probably mainly clone out the black spots, otherwise it may loose some of it's charm. What an amazing job on the restoration Christopher & also a fantastic heirloom.
