Extension Tubes - Setting Aperture with Canon DSLR

October 4th, 2011
Sorry if this is old news - but with cheap extenstion tubes (like the ones I bought) there are no contacts, so no camera apeture or auto-focus control.

I found with mine that with all three tubes on, the focus point was about 3-5cm away from the front of the lens, and the depth-of-field is < 1mm. Almost impossible to focus.

However, it is possible to manually stop down a lens with a Canon DSLR as follows:
* Mount the lens as normal
* Dial in the required aperture (I found f/8 - f/11 good)
* Press and hold the depth-of-field preview button
* Unmount the lens, keeping the DoF preview pressed
* Re-mount on the extension tubes.

Voila - far more depth of field for tour close work (but you'll need a tripod or flash)

Very good to know! I was looking at buying tubes and had never considered that would be an issue.

@jessicaelaine Depending on the tubes they may have contacts. If they are less than $20 they probably won't. Mine were over $100 but have all of the contacts so it is just like shooting anything else.
