Haunted Houses

November 1st, 2011
The magazine I edit needs photos of a haunted house for NEXT October's issue. Since it's up now I'm going to photograph it tonight. Any tips would be SERIOUSLY appreciated. How do I do it so it looks scary/spooky but people can SEE it? I will probably use a 24-70mm lens (it's the widest I have) and I can use a tripod and I have a 5D Mark II so can shoot higher ISO. Have a speedlite but will that take away from it? What if I bounce it off the ceiling?

Depends with the speed light. Can make some cool effects, but one beauty of digital is the screen on the back. Experiment, but I would suggest low power on the flash, second curtain sync and bounce. But mostly I would not use it.
I've shot haunted houses an the best result was no flash. Hope the comments are not too late.

I don't have an answer for your question, but I think it's rad that you edit a magazine :)

with that high ISO and a tripod you will be totally fine -- i'd say you've got two kinds of shots that you can take:

* high aperture wide shot on a tripod and enhancing the available light. Kind of like this one i took the other day, it makes use of all those shadows. This would work really well at the wide end of your lens.

* speedlight, super-dramatic lighting on a small focused area, handheld - you could do some cool stuff lighting from the bottom, like that infamous shot of John McCain that made him look like an evil vampire: http://www.jillgreenberg.com/names/show/sen-john-mccain-r-az#/2

That's just two ideas, have fun!
