When taking a picture of multiple people…and trying to get a nice DOF in the background, but maintain sharp focus on the people….what aperture would you recommend and what spot do you focus on?
Are there any tricks for taking pictures of multiple people?
Firstly, the DOF extends 1/3 in front and 2/3 behind your focal point. So ideally you want to judge how deep your shot of multiple people is and then focus on something 1/3 into that depth.
Secondly, I usually tend to shoot group portraits at about f/8 sometimes f/11. But it all depends on your lens, focal length, and aperture. Here is a link to a great DOF table. Input all your info and see what you get. How far away you stand plays a big role in DOF. http://www.dofmaster.com/doftable.html
@cohare I can't help you, I'm afraid, but I am going to keep an eye on your replies because it's something I would like to know. Hope you don't mind?:-)
The depth of field preview button will show you exactly what will be in focus when you snap the photo. It can take getting used to, especially for low light and small apertures, but it is a valuable tool.
On your camera it is immediately below the lens on the right.
@emmilou Yes, it should be in the same spot as the one for the 90D. I am on my phone and do not have access to that manual, so cannot tell you exactly where.
