This is the building where my son did his tertiary studies for architecture. It was built in 1865 as a lunatic asylum and had various name changes, from Whau Lunatic Asylum to Carrington Psychiatric Hospital (a rather more PC name). It was closed in 1992 and subsequently became Unitec Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design. My brother was an in-patient here in the late 1980s and has pretty dire memories of the place. It does have quite a history, but apparently is soon to be demolished because it doesn't meet earthquake standards and the university doesn't have the funds to earthquake strengthen it. My son has good memories of the place.
@littleconnie I think he will be sad to see the building demolished - it is quite an iconic building. @s4sayer Yes true, but it is nice when some heritage things are kept. Matter of cost too of course as well as safety. @partyof72015 Thanks Brandi. @taffy Thanks Taffy - yes the contrast is experiences is interesting in itself.
