Himba Woman by dkbarnett

Himba Woman

We were so privileged to be able to visit a settlement of the Himba people - semi-nomads who live in scattered settlements throughout the Kunene Region. This lady showed us how they clean themselves with steam and aromatic smoke from coals with herbs and spices, then rub their skin with red ochre and fat. This protects their skin too from the harsh desert climate, and from insects. They also smoke their clothing and blankets. It is so hard to imagine living without showering! Water in those arid regions is very precious!
What an interesting photo and information. You were so lucky to be able to speak to these people.
