I wanted to see a kiwi in the wild so went on a kiwi encounter tour - going by catamaran first, then a 2 hour walk through the bush, to a sandy surf beach called Ocean Beach. There we spotted two kiwis. We got reasonably close because they were busy eating sand hoppers. They couldn't hear us because the surf was behind us, and their eyesight isn't much good. They have great hearing and great sense of smell. The guide used a red light as this doesn't disturb them. Although he did use a white torch a bit later and I got some reasonable photos, I quite liked the red effect of this one.
@dide I just missed seeing a kiwi during the daylight on day three of our tramp - my friends saw it and they were not far behind me. Stewart Island is one of the few places where they do come out in the daytime. They got a wonderful video of it, but the photos (on a phone) weren't very exciting.
Incredible awasome shot. Lucky you. We once saw a baby kiwi in that nature mountain south if Cambridge begins with an M. There was a tv crew making a nature programme for kids. They pulled a baby kiwi out if it's burrow, we were so lucky to experience that.
