Poetry Slam

Tonight I went to watch my student Mariya compete in the Poetry Slam. She had won 1st place at our school and was competing against other 7th grade students in the district. She had written a poem about her grandmother having breast cancer and how she wants her grandmother to not give up--to hold on and live. Mariya tied for 2nd place out of 10 students!! I'm so proud of her because she thought about quitting at the beginning (a couple of weeks ago)due to nerves but she hung in there and she did so well!! One of those proud teaching moments!! :) The 2nd picture is all the 7th grade students that competed, along with their teachers---can you see me and mariya?? :)
Yes, I see you two! I love slam poetry--Hannah also loves to perform this. although she has never competed. She did one last year for the high school and teachers on animal cruelty-----it had many people in tears!

Yes, I see you. Please tell Mariya that another person joins with you and the judges in offering her praise. It take alot of character to finish what you start -- especially when it requires you to step outside your "comfortable" zone.
I suspect a really great teacher helped her to grow to where she could step outside her box and accomplish this.

Wow, I can imagine how proud you were of her...what a difficult topic for her as I'm shre she's really deeply feeling concern for her grandmother! Nice that you could share her with us!

How great that you got her to stay in the competition...and that she got 2nd place. Sounds like a sweet girl to write a poem about her grandma.
