Summer Memory #21:If Walls Could Talk

I didn't do much today except take kids back and forth to practices so decided to drive around to find something to photograph.
I don't know why I love taking pictures of old houses and buildings. I guess it's because they used to be so full of life and now they sit there abandoned and empty. If the walls could talk what stories would they tell? As I was taking the picture I noticed the sign on the right of it reads "cigarettes sold here"....so at one time this used to be a little store on the side of the road. I wonder what else they sold and who shopped there? I also like how the tree is growing out of the windows...makes me wonder how longs its been abandoned.

PS: found out tonight after a friend on FB saw the picture that this used to be a local beer joint--all the farmers and locals would hang out drinking beer and playing dominoes--she wasn't sure when it closed down though--love learning the history because so often I never find out!!
I agree there is something so touching about an old building, once so full of life and now abandoned. You have captured it perfectly.

This is a great discovery...I think many of us here on 365 can really appreciate this type of photo...stretches the imagination of what it used to be...the life and energy of these walls...now simply a part of decay...back to the earth type feeling...I wish I could have gone in there to buy a pack of cigarettes for .25...but those days are long gone...and I don't smoke anymore...

Awesome find. It does looks like it has been many a moon since it was used for anything other than a temporary stop for an itinerant traveler. I also love taking such photos. And lucky you could get close enough to it to take the photo...what usually happens to me is a spot something but there is nowhere to pull over.

Nature is taking it back. In some ways it looks sad in this condition. But then, it served its purpose and that is good again. The tree growing out of it seems kind of a natural consequence. The air conditioner seems out of place and is a surprising contrast.

That has character... love it. Would love to have a good poke round inside it.

You picked a good gone! Love the foliage on the roof. Almost has a face like on the houses we used to draw as kids, two windows and a door in the center.

Effective image.

thanks for the history... wonder if "closed down" means 'by officials because it was illegal' or 'by owners'? You can just hear the noise and clatter of dominoes and see the groups of men at the end of the working day enjoying a beer.... creates a whole new set of images!

Della, the only reason I have today's shot ready early is b/c with the theme we can take the photos all week so I took that one last night. Don't have any more "refreshing" ideas yet though so need to start thinking...at least the themes help give us ideas....... sometimes.

Della, I love it. I'm really drawn to old and abandoned buildings, too. How fun that you were able to learn some of the history. Love the tree growing out of the window. The touch of green against the gray is so nice.

That is a great picture and it really does seem to tell a story. Now that I know it was a beer joint, I can totally picture the farmers putting a few back after a long day of making hay.
