Teachers who inspire know that teaching is like cultivating a garden, and those who would have nothing to do with thorns must never attempt to gather flowers. ~Author Unknown

Tonight I had Open House at my school and had one of those "teacher moments" that all teachers need every once and awhile. One of my former students who is now in 11th grade stopped by to say hi. After we hugged, she stepped back and told me there was something she wanted to tell me. First, I need to let you know that I taught her when she was in 8th grade. She was in the class of students who had failed the Reading TAKS test (TX state test) the year before. Most of these students were struggling and not very motivated. After their hard work EVERY one of them passed the test their 8th grade year and she was one of the ones who even made a commended score!! Anyway, tonight she told me that I had inspired her and that ever since she was in my class and passed the test her whole outlook has changed. She looked at me and said" Guess what? I now want to be a lawyer!! But if I can't be a lawyer I want to be a teacher just like you!!" I cannot tell you what those words mean to me. I don't know how many times I have said the exact words about my 2nd grade teacher. She is the reason I'm a teacher because I wanted to be a teacher... JUST like HER!! Now to hear a former student say that about me.....I'm humbled and so thankful that God has led me to my calling. I'm so thankful she told me how she felt and it sure makes the start of a new year easier!! :) She also told me she's inviting me to her graduation next year.....I wouldn't miss it for the world!!

(P.S. My 2nd grade teacher took ME to lunch when I graduated from high school.....maybe I can do the same for my student!!)

**I'm so glad I took this picture this morning...I had no idea how perfectly it would represent my day--I only wish i had thought to take a picture of her!!"
how gratifying, and how very precious of her to share that with you. we don't usually get to hear the way we've impacted others--what a gift!!

Wonderful pic, color and focus but even a more inspirational story, great to be able to influence our children for the better and then have that shared! I'm sure you will enjoy her graduation!

:) you nearly made me cry. It is a great priviledge to be in a position to have such an influence on a persons life. I am personally thankful for all the awesome and amazing teachers both my boys have encountered over the years many of whom have had a lasting impression. Like being a parent, being a teacher is such an important position in a childs life and when everything clicks my heart sings. My youngest, who still LOVES school at 16, has an awesome set of teachers this year from English to Drama to Spanish, History and Biology...he is even happy with who he got for Maths (not his best subject) which I am so grateful for as he has just begun his IB diploma so those relationships really matter. I hope he has the opportunity to tell the teachers who influenced him one day what a great job they are doing.

Aw, what a great thing to inspire a student. That must make you feel so good (and make up for the rough days too, I'm sure). Teaching is a tough job--I home-schooled for a year and although my kiddos did great, it gave me a good perspective on the planning that goes into the lessons. My hat's off to you.

What an emotional moment. So glad you shared it with us. You clearly have the gift of the natural teacher. I love the quote you used. So true.

I think it's wonderful and so uplifting when things like this happen, and what makes it so special is that often we have no idea who we have inspired / motivated until much later when something like this happens. It makes it all worthwhile in that one moment.

How perfectly wonderful you've touched the heart of a student, and I'd imagine for the one who shared that with you, many more have held back that feeling but share the emotion. It says an awful lot for you as a teacher and a person!
