Crossing the Astoria - Megler Bridge

24 / 365
I took this from my seat in the car on our way home this evening from a trip to Portland, Or & yes you're right, that bridge goes on forever LOL
We are just coming down from the highest part, which is 200 ft above the Columbia River to allow the huge ocean going ships to pass beneath on their way to Portland, Or.

I got to walk across this bridge a few years back when I took part in the Great Columbia Crossing, which is held every October when one lane is closed to allow the hundreds of runners & walkers to cross from Washington State, which you can see in the distance here, to Oregon - the only time pedestrians are allowed on the bridge. I have to say it was an excellarating experience.
I include some links so you can see more of this amazing bridge that we cross on a regular basis as Astoria is our closest town.

It looks like they are endless, but it gives us an awesome view. Quite nice.

Great shot! It does go on forever! I'm surprised that there are so few cars on the bridge!

Thanks all ;)
@ Rick, the view is always amazing & ever changing. Last evening there were flocks of Pelican coming in to land in the river on the opposite side -down river- or the bridge. The salmon are spawning so lots of action in & around the river at the moment but my little camera was not fast enough to capture anything worth saving.
@ Julie, it is the longest bridge of its kind here in the US & spans the mouth of the Columbia River, I believe it's 4.2 miles long.
@ Carolyn, it was around 8pm when I took this. I imagine it kind of looks like any highway heading out of a small town at that time of evening, it's a quiet little corner of the north west.

Astoria is a lovely little town, so it's nice to have a feel for where you live. For a relatively small town, that's quite a nice long bridge! It would have been fun to have been in the company of so many to walk across it!

Thanks Louise, yes Astoria is a nice little town - sadly we don't live there, we are about 30 miles northwest of there on the Washington side of the river & where we were heading last night when I took this picture. They built the bridge so folks like us can drive across rather than take a ferry over to the north side of the river ;)
@ Ellen, thanks & cool name ;P Well if you decide to head up here & do the GCC let me know & I might join you ~ smile

Amazing bridge -- once a year our Chesapeake Bay Bridge that connect the Eastern Shore of Maryland with the Western Shore of Bridge and also the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel that connects the Southern Eastern Shore of Virginia with the Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Tidewater Virginia -- well, they both close one span of their double span to allow people to walk across.

I love this photo, too. I want to crop the car out (how rude of me to edit for others) because it would make for nice lines in the image. But the car gives you the day in the life feel which is what we are all about. :D Love the photo!!
