I went to the reservoirs at Marsworth this morning for some air and decided to visit Pitstone windmill, just a few miles further on, as well. The building is not open to the public very often but it's possible to walk round the outside any time. It's a post windmill and dates to around 1627, maybe even earlier. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitstone_Windmill All the top section can be turned so that the sails can be made to face the wind. The wheel in the foreground aids the process of moving the top.

@janturnbull Thank you, Janet. It really is like that - it's a lovely mill. I don't know why they paint the wheel red, maybe it's traditional. One of these days I'll go when it's actually open ( doesn't happen very often) and ask someone.
