The weather has been glorious here today. Lester and I did our usual Friday supermarket shop this morning but then decided, on a complete whim, to go to Maldon in Essex. It's about 75 miles away from here but Lester is used to driving those sorts of distances. The nicest part of retirement is being able to do things like that on a whim. :-)
Maldon is on the Blackwater estuary and is famous for its salt.
There are three of the wonderful old Thames sailing barges moored there. They're now used for parties, corporate events and the like. All their sails are this distinctive red ochre colour and the lines of the rigging are beautiful, I think.
Info. on the barges can be found here if you'd like to know a bit more about them : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thames_sailing_barge

Love this shot of the sail riggings - You have so many interesting places to go wander - I'm envious of all your variety. And how nice that you take full advantage of your area and share it with us.
Yes I'm a great fan of retirement too !! This is a lovely clear shot. I love these old sailing barges. It must have been hard to climb the rigging in a storm.
Very evocative. Boats are such fun. Love it. Rigging is one of the things that really sets me off. I have a painting of a ship that was my grandfathers first vessel. He was a cabin boy and the ship is painted by a sign writer. It is totally unique an geometric. The rigging is fab. This really reminded me of it. Lovely.
