and he stands guard, on a leaf! This tiny humming bird (Black Chinned) has taken over the feeder in our back yard. He owns the feeder. He is amazing - and the purple feathers are amazing - The Annas have their magenta, the Rufus, Orange but he is purple - he chirps completely different than the other varieties of hummers and even his flight/wing beat resonates completely different! He is beautiful in person - I hope that I will be able to get a picture of him in all his glory - this was the first I got of him, earlier today.
Thank your for your comments and inspiration! All is appreciated - keeps me shooting which helps keep me in the moment. Thank you.
Year 7 on this adventure! I’m especially appreciative of the community found here! I am inspired by everyone; learning from so many. Your shares make...
Wow! How cool that you have one of these hanging around! We only have the Anna's and an occassional Allen's or Rufous. Fantastic detail you got here, fabulous!
What an awesome shot! I just have the Ruby-throated and they may be slowing down. I didn't see much of them today. Fall is on its way. And this is a fav!

I'm so glad you enjoyed him as much as I did! As it turns out, this is his full on plumage - his head is actually this dark color with only his collar shining the bright purple when the light hits him just right! I learned more about him this morning - I learned that Black Chins rarely stay longer than one day, even when food is scarce, as they are migrating! Now I'm 2x as grateful because he was here two full days! I read up that he is now off to either Mexico or possibly the Gulf! Both, a significant distance from here. He will travel up to 23 miles a day! His species is known to live a long time (a female was know to live 11 yrs and 2 mos minimum). The wing beat is different as is his chirping (he sounds like a dogs squeaky toy). My only regret is that I didn't film him like I wanted to. He owned the feeder and was not afraid of me so I would at least have gotten his chirping. Oh! and their eggs are about the size of a coffee bean - I've included a link below if interested in hearing what he sounds like. I will apologize in advance for sharing one or two more pics of him. He was so cool and I missed hearing him, today. Thank you again for all your comments, thoughts and favs! I enjoyed being able to share him with you and I always appreciate your feedback! https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-chinned_Hummingbird/overview
