Steve - in answer to your question: Bafana mean "Boys" in the local Zulu language. The term was coined by local journalists in about 1992, just after South Africa was re-admitted to world sport, and our soccer team were "boys" compared with the men of world soccer. I don't think the double use of the word "Bafana" has any specific meaning other than emphasis, or a catchy title. The singular word is "Umfana".
Stick with 'soccer' Eleanor! I know what you mean. I've watched four different games of football today-in four different codes. Well done "Bafana Bafana" - so close to winning but the draw was a mighty effort. PS The Wallabies beat Engalnd tonight so I'm happy too. That's Rugby Union football Andy :)
@Andy: I've always understood that "Football" is a generic name for a large number of games - soccer, gridiron, rugby etc. When speaking about a specific code, why use a general term which may confuse people when a specific term is more accurate?
:) Have a great time watching your team this evening!
I love all the enthusiasm I see here, and what fun to have a party while watching the games! I can see where having a (very) tall husband comes in handy here! (I've shared your site with my daughter & her husband who loved visiting South Africa)
LOL... I know - it's an English thing this annoyance with the word "soccer".. To us, football is football, rugby is rugby, gridiron is american footbal and soccer is what the american's try to play (haha after Saturday's game they try quite well don't they :-)...)

Cool, I love your photos! Good luck! Here in Brazil we only speak of the World Cup right now and everybody is dressed in Green and Yellows... Unfortunatelly we are not very good playing the vuvuzela!
