The Mother of all Cape Dutch Gables by eleanor

The Mother of all Cape Dutch Gables

Cape Dutch architecture is synonymous with the Cape's wine farms. Groot Constantia could be called the "Mother". One of the oldest in the country, the buildings are now house a museum, although the farm still produces excellent wines.

This gable was added about 100 years after the original building was constructed in the late 1600s. The additions were also the work of Thibault and Anreith. There is a figurine called "Abundance" in the gable, but the early-morning sunlight and shadows (which I just love!) got the better of my photography skills.
Love this. Wonderful structure. Shadows are so dramatic.

Love the photo and the building and the history. The shadows in the foreground are so effective. Your western history is so much older than ours. I'm amazed that there are buildings dating from the 1600's.

Not traveling just picking up my daughter. She finished a 2 year job in Washington, will stay for 6 weeks (!) at home and then moves for at least two years to Germany. We love every minute with her!

Hi Eleanor, that distinctive architecture caught my eye whilr browsing through curves entries. It made me instantly homesick! I'm a south African now living on San Antonio.
